Sorry, I just joined this community. We have been dealing with similar circumstances at the University of Utah. Our university has established the following procedures when it comes to our posting processes:

The Basics

• Only members of the University community may post flyers or posters on campus.
• Only one sign, notice, or poster affiliated with a specific event is permitted on a single bulletin board at any one time. Up to a total of three signs, notices, or posters authored or sponsored by the same organization or member of the University community are permitted on a single bulletin board at any one time.
• Signs, notices, or posters are encouraged to be on an 8.5-inch-by-11-inch piece of paper. All signs, notices, or posters must be smaller than 8.5 inches by 14 inches.
• A sign, notice, or poster may not cover another sign, notice, or poster.
• The author or sponsor must be clearly identified on the posting.
• The posting can not use University of Utah trademarks without permission.
• The posting’s subject matter must be speech protected by the First Amendment.
• Expiration time stamps are added to the poster at the Union Services Desk. These stamps do not indicate or imply that the University, the Union, or its staff support the views expressed in the content of postings. Posters can only be up for 14 days.

Flyer Posting Process

1. Email?(or dropoff) an example of your flyer or poster to the Union Services Desk
   • Email?unionservicesdesk@union.utah.edu
   • Union Services Desk is located on the second floor of the Student Union.
2. Please allow 2 -3 business days for a flyer or poster review. (Review may take longer based on staffing or holiday schedules.)?
   • Call the Services Desk at 801-581-5888 to confirm the posting has been reviewed.
   • The Dean of Students Office may require edits, or deny postings.
3. After review, flyers must get a visible expiration date timestamp from the Union Services Desk on each posting. A date after which the sign, notice or poster may be removed.
   • Flyers that were dropped off instead of emailed must be picked up within five business days after their review. After five business days, flyers will be recycled.
4. Time-stamped postings are ready to be posted on campus
   • Postings must be put up by the organization requesting the posting, the Union staff does not post flyers across campus

Hi everyone!

With it being an election year and with everything that’s going on in the world, we are having an increase in campus groups and individuals seeking approval to post political-themed flyers and posters on our bulletin boards. Some of the flyers that have been brought to us for approval definitely cross the line in regards to our current policies. For example, including derogatory language that targets specific groups. Others may not directly conflict with our policies but have raised questions among staff about what’s acceptable.?

With that in mind, we are considering revisiting our policies for approving flyers and posters for our building. We hope to provide clarity and make these decisions easier for our Welcome Desk staff. If anyone feels comfortable sharing their policies for flyer approvals and their approach to flyers that contain political and/or sensitive subject matters, that would be very helpful!

We have a few policies that would apply here.

I attached the sign that we have on each bulletin board in the Student Centers buildings.? This also links to the campus posting policy, located in our student manual.? Our campus posting policies are currently under review, and will likely be updated this summer.? Also see our Policy on Political Activism which also includes language regarding what is allowed to be posted related to political candidates.

It is worth noting that in the Reynolds Club (one of our student centers), we have the only board on campus that officially allows for anonymous postings and external flyers.? While free speech postings are allowed in other locations, they must identify the sponsoring organization when posting.
