We have had one for at least five years and it has had mixed results. The hope was that we could educate students enough about the concept that they would post their photos from anywhere during large events and pick up their print outs. Take a photo at the top of a ferris wheel, post it, and then grab your printed photo! In reality, that isn’t happening. The photo booth setup is more successful because setting up a backdrop with props makes people stop for photos. It also helps to have someone very engaging there (engaging is key, they can’t be just standing around) to pull people in and take the photos, so you will have to staff the station. We ended up purchasing a small iPad to go with the machine. The person working the photo station uses it to take pictures for people and posts it to our hidden Instagram so they can get prints. They are also able to manage the app and send reprints. The machine itself is extremely heavy and requires two people to setup. This coupled with the WiFi issues made us ultimately decide to keep the printer at our Info Desk area and tell people to go there to pick up their photos. While that concept has mostly worked, due to the lack of instant gratification and extra steps we end up with quite a few photos left without homes.
There is too much education needed – like the private vs. public account issues for posting – that create hurdles to the Photoboxx being successful. We posted on our social media, we included the info in newsletters, we had in-person conversations with students…and it still isn’t getting traction. Part of it is that students are selective about what they post on social and they curate their profiles – they don’t post immediately in the moment, they do recaps of the day/week/month. Ultimately, I feel that the more traditional photo booth that you can rent is a better option. Even purchasing a photo print station that students can use to print via their phone would be better.

Has anyone here purchased or rented from Photoboxx? We are considering purchasing a printer to use at some of our larger events, but want to hear from others if it’s worth the investment. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!
