The Iowa State University Memorial Union has a full-time staff member who is responsible for the art gallery as well as our permanent art collection and the Workspace (our arts & crafts studio). I’m sure she would be happy to connect with you if you would like to pick her brain. In general, we have 6-8 shows in our gallery space each year. 3 or 4 of them are student shows for which we solicit submissions and contract an external adjudicator to select which pieces go in the show. One of the student shows is connected with a grant program funding by our Student Government which provides funds for students to create artwork. The other shows are cultivated by our staff member–typically local or regional artists. Most of our shows include pieces that are for sale (it’s up tot he artist) and if sold the gallery keeps a commission (30% I think?). The MU also purchases a piece from most shows to add to our permanent collection, especially from the student shows. The gallery itself is staffed by students whenever it is open to assist with customer service as well as security for the artwork.?

Subject: Art Gallery
The Pittenger Student Center at Ball State has an Art Gallery that is underutilized. I am seeking examples of how art galleries in Student Centers accept submissions. In addition, do you have staff who manages the gallery? Do you ever sell art pieces? I am planning to approach our fine arts program for suggestions, however I’d like to get a sense of the day to day logistics of operating a successful gallery.
Thanks
