I posted a question not long ago about student unions/centers reporting to aux services. New question; is anyone familiar with a model where the union reports through campus facilities?
Thanks, friends.

Hi Dave,
I have an interesting story. When I first was hired as a Night/Weekend Operations Manager at the Student Center at DePaul, we started as part of Student Affairs. Years later, our department moved into Facility Operations. This was the case for most of my career.
Then in January 2023 we moved back to Student Affairs and this is currently my division. So, I know how it is being in both areas.?
How we reported in Facility Operations was that the Student Center Director at DePaul was one of many direct reports to the VP of Facility Operations.?
If you have any specific questions about how things worked as a member of Facilites, I would be happy to discuss more with you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thanks.

Dave,
Sure. I will list them by area:
Facility Operations
Pros:
Less of a grey area. Had more decisive decisions regarding potential event issues, etc.
Good work relationship with all of the carpenters, electricians, and trades. If we needed an instant issue fixed, it was much easier to navigate.
Good work relationship with Campus Security who also is under Facility Operations.?
Much smoother follow up/closing the loop on when facility issues took place and how they are solved.?
At times costs were waived more when additional work for events were needed – Additional custodians etc.?
Cons:
Had to provide more of an explanation when grey areas took place in our building. Many times, if a challenging event is taking place that needed an all hands on deck approach, most of the trades did not understand and would question the reasons why.?
How events went are not as high on importance as how events looked.?
Spent much more time on the floor checking to make sure VIP events went flawless both in how the space looked and how the restrooms, common areas, and other areas looked.
Student Affairs
Pros
More importance and awareness on the development and overall well-being of our Student Employees.
More events to get to know other colleagues in the division.?
A bigger encouragement of collaboration in roles for the better good of the entire division.?
Cons
At times it is challenging to explain to colleagues how Facility issues (heating/cooling) are not always an easy or straightforward fix. When you know the answer to an issue will be a no, yet the client wants to involve higher leadership in exploration of the issue.?
More challenges by clients or colleagues about how events are impacted when you need to abide by city and building codes as a facility manager.?
Being charged more from Facility Operations for events requests (that perhaps were waived previously).?
Having to be the one to be asked questions if clients know you previously worked in Facility Operations. Some events still think you represent Facility Operations as a spokesperson. This includes getting the bulk of complaints.
More meetings.
A higher duty to make sure division events go well even though events planning is not a primary duty.?
Hopefully this list works for you. I don’t think one division is better than the other, however they are much different in operation from each other.? If I need to elaborate on anything, feel free to let me know. Thanks.
