Presidentials Losses at Temple University & Volunteer State Community College
Hello everyone,
Last week higher ed lost two university presidents: JoAnne Epps at Temple University and Dr. Orinthia Montague from Volunteer State Community College.
President Epps served at Temple for 40 years, starting in the campus bookstore. She was a professor in the Beasley School of Law and dean of the law school. Her talent and experience led her to become a city prosecutor in Los Angeles and later a federal prosecutor in Philadelphia. In 2016 she stepped into the role of executive vice president and provost. President Epps delayed her retirement while the university sought a permanent president. Sadly, during a memorial service on September 19 she collapsed at the podium and passed away shortly thereafter.??
Dr. Montague served as the fourth president of Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin Tennessee since September 2021. Prior to that, she served as the fourth president of Tompkins Cortland Community College from 2017-2021 in Dryden, New York. Dr. Montague leaves a legacy of service as vice president of student affairs and chief diversity officer, and dean of students, at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, MN. She was found in her hotel room on September 22.
It is sobering to learn of the passing of these two leaders, both within days of each other. Thoughts of self-care, rest, and support come to mind as I consider the weight of responsibility each woman carried.?
Let’s take a moment to honor the legacy of Dr. Montague and President Epps, who both served faithfully. Let’s also be mindful of campus leaders who serve tirelessly. Those who give their time and talent to the profession. Let’s also consider: who will pick up the mantle when you choose to move forward?
Be well,
