New Technology Community Leader Introduction
Posted by Geoff Pimlatt on July 14, 2022 at 2:23 pmHello everyone! I’m excited to be taking on this role and start giving back to the ACUI community.
I’m the Information Systems Senior Manager for the undergraduate Students’ Council (USC) at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. I have been with the USC for coming up on 25 years, and have ushered in a lot of new technology in that time. The USC is the student association for more than 33,500 undergraduate students at Western. We are one of the largest student associations in North America. With a $30 million dollar operating budget, 40 full-time staff, and hundreds of part-time student staff and volunteers, the USC provides a robust offering of programs, services, and operations that significantly contributes to Western’s student experience. We own and operate two restaurants, a clothing retail store, a campus radio station and newspaper. We facilitate the undergraduate health and dental plan, the student transit pass, and late night shuttle busses. We run major events including Western’s Orientation Program, a Concert Series, and Beer Fest. We provide support for students through a comprehensive peer network, the Peer Support Centre, and our on-campus Food Bank.
I am accountable for each of the systems and technologies that support these initiatives, mostly focused on the computer/web/code side of things but have a working knowledge of what we view as “Productions” – all the lighting, mics, a/v, etc. that go into putting on live events.
In addition to tech, I have a strong background in education. I hold a B.Ed. and taught evening courses in the Continuing Education department at our local community college for many years. I hope to use some of that skill set to facilitate conversations and collaboration among you tech champions at ACUI.
I’m looking forward to an exciting year and meeting as many of you as possible, both virtually and hopefully in person in Boston!

Hi James – nice to hear from you!
We are just wrapping up two demo / renovation projects in our building – changing some underutilized spaces into new open workspaces for our Clubs and Peer Support teams. We are setting up the spaces with offices for our admin staff, workspaces for volunteers, and programming space. I’ve attached some relevant documents.
Beyond the usual network drops, etc, we are setting up large TVs with Airtame (https://airtame.com/products/airtame-2/) casting devices to facilitate wireless screensharing. We had used Solstice devices in our conference rooms, but have had connectivity and performance issues in our environment, so I’m hoping these will work better. I’ll be sure to provide an update once the spaces are fully up and running in September.AirPlay and GoogleCast are blocked from our campus wifi networks, so those simpler options don’t work for us.Does anyone else have stories they would like to share, particularly around screen casting options?GeoffGeoff Pimlatt (He/Him) | Senior Manager, Information SystemsUniversity Community Centre, Room 340 | London, ON N6A 3K7To enhance the educational experience and quality of life for all undergraduates at Western University.
The USC would like to acknowledge that Western University and our offices are situated in London, Ontario, on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (Neutral), Anishinabek, Haudenosaunee, and Leni Lenapewak people. This territory also covers lands connected to the London Township Treaty and Sombra Treaty 1796, and the Dish with One Spoon Wampum.

I would think so, Matt. Both devices can be set up to connect to either wired ethernet, including PoIP, or wireless networks using most configurations. Western’s wifi is PEAP with MSCHAPv2 authentication, and we connect just fine using a generic user login created for this purpose. We have found that the Solstice devices drop connection randomly on a fairly regular basis, and need to be manually rebooted to reconnect, so I’m hoping for more reliability from AirTame.

Subject: New Technology Community Leader IntroductionHello everyone!
Geoff
