    Hello Everyone,

We are currently planning for the fourth phase of renovating our Campus Center. As part of this process, I am seeking information from my colleagues in regards to large event spaces such as ballrooms. If you could please share the following information, it would be very helpful:

    – Does your Campus/Student Center have a Ballroom or equivalent large event space? What is the maximum capacity of the space?
    – Is it possible to divide the space? Are these manual or automatic dividers? How is the sound quality? Air/heating quality?
    – Do you rent this space out? And, if you can divide your space, has revenue increased as a result of being able to divide the room?
    – Anything else you would like to share?

    Thank You.

    Stephen,
Here at Pittsburg State, we expanded our building seven years ago a created a new Ballroom with a total capacity of 800.  It’s divisible into three sections with electric partitions.  During the design phase, I told the architects that electric partitions are a requirement and overall have worked out fine.

We use carpet tiles over concrete for the flooring and they actually have worked out great and it’s helped with sound proofing.  The partitions have a cloth material on them, and the walls have soundproofing material on them.  We can have events in each Ballroom without much sound bleeding.  The exception is Sorority rush, but when you have them singing and cheering there isn’t much you can do about it.
The other thing to take into consideration is AV.  We have a projector and screen for each room that can be used individually for each room or synced for all three or two.  A, B, C individually or all together or A & B or B & C.  The Sound works the same way.
I would happy to discuss this further with you if you would like.
    Jeff

Here at the Lory Student Center at Colorado State University, we have a similar setup as Jeff described.? Our Grand Ballroom has a capacity of 1800 and is divisible into A, B, C, D sections (or combinations).? ?Our airwalls are manual but easy to move/setup and our floor is hardwood.? We frequently have two different events at a time.? Our ballroom was designed from the start with the airwalls so HVAC and AV were both designed to work appropriately with the walls open/closed.? We do rent out our spaces and we are able to increase revenue since we can book multiple events at the same time.
