Crestron vs. AV over IP
Posted by Andrew Mangum on April 19, 2022 at 6:19 pmHello All,
I am looking into bringing our main venue space back up to its former glory. We can keep working with Crestron or “upgrade” to AV over IP. In my experience, and the experience of others in the ACUI community, Crestron has been a bit of a headache for everyone at some point.
AV over IP is new, and I haven’t had much experience with it, if you have had any experience with, suggestions, horror stories, or success stories I’d love to hear them!

Thanks for posting this Andrew.? It’s been on my mind as well.
We have a fairly complex set of circumstances and have been using AMX/Crestron gear for years but we have had issues with the systems in the building.? One concern has always been just trading one set of issues for another.? We would still need controllers (a variety of them) that may still need occasional resets, etc.? We still have the issue of many hands running the system – we use lots of student building managers to manage A/V on a daily basis.? And we would need support from IT services to have more open networks that could be hacked or worse…As you have moved into this discussion on your campus, have you talked through any of the hardware and security related concerns yet?
We have multiple rooms with multiple parts (ballroom with 3, meeting room with 4, etc.).? Have you discussed system complexity with anyone yet?I hope others chime in on this thread and can share their experience with AV-O-IP and we can continue the discussion.
Thanks again.——————————

Jason,
Thank you for commenting! I have discussed security with our IT department, and since it would be a local network and not integrated into the campus network (our current system isn’t either), they are okay with it. In terms of complexity and specific hardware, we have a quote that mirrors our current setup. Instead of continuing with a Crestron 8×8 and the input/output cards we would have an SVSi VoIP system. The Crestron user interface can be integrated with the new system.?
Thanks again!

Hi Andrew,?
The Joe Crowley Student Union has been using Crestron’s AV over IP system (NVX) in one of our spaces for a little over 2 years.? It is part of the building’s local network. Our building does not have an IT staff, so we work closely with the University of Nevada’s Information Security team, as needed.? Our initial curiosity with AV over IP was how it would handle HDCP handshake, but we have not experienced any issues in this regard with NVX.? Which brand are you considering?? The other one I have heard is auroamultimedia.com
The rest of our AV system is Crestron DM, which was installed in 2016, and I am interested in AV over IP for the next building wide upgrade.? Thank you for the post, and look forward more discussion on this topic.

Thank you for your comment James. The current system we were quoted is a AMX NMX system. I am curious to see what other brands there are. On another thread Parry Lopez suggested I should get multiple quotes all diversifying the equipment and installer. Hopefully that, in itself, will bring a lot of information to the table. Thank you!
