    Hello Sustainability Friends

I’m excited to be the Community of Practice Leader for this academic year.

To get us started, I’ve scheduled a Sustainability Virtual Meet Up for Thursday, November 14th from 12-1 Eastern Time, Zoom link here. I’m hoping this is a good enough middle ground time wise. At this meet up I hope to do some introductions, discuss what people are looking for from this group, and then maybe do some sharing on what we are all doing, or hoping to do, on our campuses and in our communities. From here I plan on scheduling at least a monthly zoom meet up and a couple of ACUI educational sessions.

A little about who I am and my relationship to sustainability. I am the Associate Director for Event Production and Operations at the Armstrong Student Center at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. I’ve been in this role for 3 years and before this I worked in Residence Life at Miami for 6 years (Rochester NY before that). I have a deep, personal passion for sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint and Miami Ohio fits right into my passion. I have been a member of our Climate Action Team for the past 2 years where we debuted our Climate Action Plan for Carbon Neutrality by 2040 (which we will likely meet sooner), and our town also has a Carbon Neutrality date of 2045 and mirrors our plan. In my role in operations at Armstrong I have implemented our first campus composting program, moved away from disposable batteries, and work to refurbish over purchase when we’re looking a little shabby in the building. This is on top of our university’s geothermal infrastructure and new solar field going in this year, both of which I’m happy to talk about with folks. There is still LOTS to be done here, but we’re on a good track so far.?

I’m happy to share resources, articles, brainstorm ideas, etc. I know that this area of work can sometimes be emotionally draining, but I also know that there is so much good happening in this area that we can help promote to make a better future.?

I would LOVE to hear from folks why they are in the group, what you are doing on your campus and in your unions/centers in terms of sustainable practices, and what you hope to get out of the group. Please reply back and let’s start talking!
