Student Organization – Annual Training/Recognition

Currently we run upwards of 30 trainings, all via Zoom with an element of Kahoot quiz questions, that our recognized student organizations must attend (one of) annually to maintain their recognition status.? These trainings have evolved over the years, but content is pretty much one-size-fits-all in approach and covers the broadest of topics as it relates to managing their organizations.

In addition sending one representative to one training, they also must complete a re-registration form to update certain key information with our office.

Does anyone have a system where returning leaders attend a different training option with more focused/specific information to meet them where they’re at?? Do you have in-person trainings?? Only virtual?? What options do you have to account for different needs or learning styles?? Tell me all about differing approaches to ensure that leaders get useful information while also honoring their (and our staff’s) time.

At Wentworth Institute of Technology, we moved away from a simple training and opted for a conference style approach – we offer 3-4 different sessions per hour, so that different officers who attend can attend one that fits their experience. We also offer leadership development workshops (how to manage conflict, having difficult conversations, working with alumni) for more seasoned leaders. We toss in a couple of all-group sessions, like our anti-hazing workshop required by the state.?

We have even moved the agenda to an app so that students can pick and choose their conference sessions like at a professional conference and engage with other participants before and after the event. Moving to this format from a training has been highly received and we’re looking at way to improve the workshop offerings without it becoming a leadership conference (that is offered two weeks later on our campus).

Contact Celia Keefer at keeferc@wit.edu if you want more details and agendas.
