Student Organization Accreditation/Tier System

    Hey Folks,

Does anybody’s institution use an accreditation/tier system in addition to a registration process for their student organizations? Essentially something that incentivizes and rewards those organizations that perform exceptionally, while also delineating that not every organization exists on the same scale (i.e. some organizations want to host large scale programs on a regular basis and go on trips, while others just want to get together and play chess once a week).? If you have a system, what has worked and what hasn’t worked and would you be willing to share the different requirements for those accreditation levels/tiers?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Zac,?

I don’t have anything to share but this is something we have been considering for some time now as we review and revise our recognition policies. The thought was to put long-standing clubs who do a lot of programming into a tier and everyone else into a lower tier. The first would require a staff/faculty advisor and would not need to re-register (because these clubs have returned for several years) but would still need to update their information (we use Engage) and would submit a budget plan for allocation. Our campus does not allocate funds each year but budgets carry forward, so this would be a bonus, especially for those who ask for funding each year any way. The other tier would re-register as usual and any funding they had would carry forward as usual (and they can still request funding). Our campus doesn’t require advisors so that second tier would remain that way and our activities office staff would continue to support them. We also thought about a third tier for orgs that form out of academic departments where they have another layer of staff support and funding sources – somewhere in between those two other tiers.?

Obviously ours is not flushed out entirely but hopefully my thoughts help a little! I’d love to hear what responses you receive from other campuses.?

    Jenn

    Hi Zac,

Sorry I missed this earlier, but Jenn’s post gave me the needed poke. U Conn uses a student org tier system you might want to look at: https://solid.uconn.edu/tier-system/

And I’m sure Isaac could point you to the best person on its use: isaac.barber@uconn.edu

    Have a great day!
