    Hello ACUI colleagues,
? ? ?Recently our presidential leadership team has been asking about how selective our student organizations are, based on concerns they’ve received through our parents and families organization.? We are able to pull some data together via our student org portal (we use Engage) and found that about 19% of our registered orgs are selective or competitive in some way.? There are concentrations of high percentages in student media and business-related orgs but some selective orgs in every area.??
? ? ?I’m working with my VP to share this information appropriately, and looking at those numbers we were wondering if anyone else has ever looked at this sort of data?? There has to be some allowance for selective or competitive membership organizations, thinking specifically about competition-based orgs, performance-based orgs, etc. and trying to be thoughtful about what a “good” balance might be for an institution.

    Any insight would be appreciated!

I already conteacted Ben offline to say we haven’t looked into this at Indiana, although I’m aware of org selectivity being an issue particularly in some areas of study.

And then I discovered this timely opinion piece from our student paper, published just last week. It outlines the author’s experience with exclusive clubs at a previous institution, and her experience seeking out inclusive organizations at IU.
