SGA Compensation

Hello colleagues! I am currently serving as an advisor to the SGA this year. As I review the overall structure, I am curious about compensation. Could you please share how your university compensates members of the Student Government Association, including the President, Vice President, Senators, and other executive members? Specifically, is the compensation provided as an hourly wage or a stipend?

    Hello Joe,

Here at Salisbury University we pay our executive board members of SGA a stipend. The range is $3K for the president to $1,500 for the treasurer. Each board member is required to work office hours but much of their work, as you know, is done in meetings and events outside of office hours.

    Hope this helps!

At Iowa State our Student Government Chief Officers are compensated with a scholarship and/or parking permit. The President receives a 100% scholarship, Vice President and Finance Director receive 75%, and Speaker of the Senate receives 50% (all scholarships are for the amount equal to in-state tuition and mandatory fees for most majors). All four of them receive a parking permit. The Vice Speaker of the Senate, Chief of Staff, and Chief Justice also receive parking permits. No other members are compensated except for the Senate Clerk and one or two committee clerks who are paid by the meeting.

    Hi Joe,

At Georgia State University, with have 6 campuses, with a Vice President (who oversees the Speaker and the Communications and Finance Directors) and a Speaker of the Senate for each campus and one President (who oversees the VPs, the University-wide Communications and Finance Directors and their cabinet (of 5 positions). Only the President ($6,000 for the year), VP and Speakers ($3,000 each) are compensated using a service-requirement stipend. All other SGA positions are uncompensated.
