Hi everyone and happy (almost) holidays!!

Three things/questions I could use some help with:

    1. Are any of you managers (or members) of a team of faculty/staff whom assist in large-scale or risky events across campus (doesn’t necessarily have to be in the union)?? I’m specifically envisioning a team of student affairs (not just union and student activities) professionals – as well as possibly others on campus whom “volunteer” to work events that might include open/free speech events but also events like large-scale concerts, commencement, convocations, fairs, carnivals, etc.? If such a team exists on your campus, I’d love to learn more either by a conversation or meeting that we could set up and/or any documents that you might have.? Looking for composition of team, how you entice/encourage/require(?) staff to be involved and also what training you have in place for these individuals (like de-escalation, crowd control, injury, etc.
    2. What might your campus have in place in terms of risk training for student organizations?? What is included in the training, who does the training, are all student org members required to take, only e-boards, etc.? Again, I would love to learn more via a meeting/chat and/or any documents that you might be able to share.
    3. How does your campus assess risk?? Soup to nuts, when an organization requests space or registers an event on (or off!) campus, what goes into your calculus in terms of extra staff assigned, procedures, etc.

I know that’s a LOT.? Even pieces and parts of any of that would be helpful as I begin to build a comprehensive risk identification and mitigation program at Rochester – with specific focus on student orgs/events.? Thank you in advance for any help you have to offer.? Also, please excuse the cross-post.? Trying to cast the net as wide as possible.

    Gratefully,

    Hi Paul.

At Illinois State we now have the Demonstration Safety Team and also the University Event Review Committee. You can reach out to the staff in Emergency Management for more information. For RSOs, that’s an area we need to expand. We do have brief risk management information on our RSO event planning resource webpage.

Hope all is well. – Kate?
