    Hello ACUI Colleagues!

Our office, which runs the student organization and Greek organization recognition processes, is working with our Dean of Students to update the Conduct Policy for student organizations.? In addition to the expectations of an individual student, we have a code of conduct that holds groups, their officers, and their advisors accountable as well.? All of this process is managed through our Dean of Students with input and support from our office.

Our current policy indicates that department affiliated groups (groups like Marching Band, Athletics, Campus Student Committees, etc.) are held to the same standards of behavior as student organizations.? For these types of groups, the policy doesn’t clarify who supports those going through misconduct cases nor who is responsible for the education of the groups in topics like hazing prevention.

Does anyone have a similar standard of expectations and if so do you mind sharing with us your modes of education / case processing for these non student organization (but student focused) groups?

Any links, feedback, and ideas would be most appreciated!

    Hello Kim,

I am reviewing our conduct section of our student organization policies as well. In our case, we do not handle department affiliated groups in the same way we handle student organizations. Because they are not student organizations, any student misconduct is handled by the student code of conduct and thus the individual students are held responsible. In both cases, affiliated or registered student organization, the faculty/staff responsible for the group is held responsible by HR’s personnel policies.

When you ask who will support those going through misconduct cases, I suspect you mean during hearings, etc.? In that case the individual student or student organization president of the group may decide who to have as their support person, if any. The support person may only speak to the individual student or student organization president during a hearing.

All education is handled by the conduct office. Students found in violation recieve sanctions based on the three pillars – education, engagement, and accountability. Accountability is typically a fine and probation period. Engagement is the mandatory attendance at a pre-approved community engagement event. Education is mandatory attendance at a DABS (Drugs, Alcohol, Behavior, and Sex) Training (open and in-depth discussions with experts in state and national law and personal safety).

    Hope this helps!
