Happy Monday everyone! At our Friends Friday last week, one of our colleagues, Gina, brought up a question about what and how we are all training our students and adjusting our unions for disability awareness, including neurodiversity. I wanted to share this topic with the group to see how you all are including that training in your schedules, see if anyone has created programming or spaces in your unions, and ask if you have any support documents to share here.?

I have also reached out to Scarlett at Central Office and shared this topic as a possible upcoming webinar, as I know my team here could definitely be doing more.??

    Thanks, everyone!!!

    Hi Chrissie!

While I was at Temple University we partnered with the Disability Resource Services office and they provided a few training sessions for us.? One that really stood out to me was how to best provide customer service to individuals who are visually impaired.? We also had current students lead training sessions that focus on their disability including a panel of students that identify on the autism spectrum and a presentation by a student who has cerebral palsy.? At my current institution I have a slide that includes “working together” reminders below and we incorporate some talk of disability awareness into our DEI training.? I also make sure to let the staff know that printed copies of the presentations are available if they want to take notes, I use captions for every training session, and I make an announce at the beginning of training that anyone that feels like they need a fresh air break or wants to stand/pace in the back of the room can do that without questions being asked.

The topic of disability awareness is near and dear to my heart and back in 2013 I developed the Abilities at Work in Student Affairs program where I work closely with the accessibility center on campus and intentionally hire individuals with a disability.? This not only provides them with (oftentimes) much needed job experience, but it gives students the opportunity to interact with individuals who are different than them.? I attached a copy of the Abilities at Work overview and a presentation I’ve done on it (which included testimonials from students) and would be more than happy to chat if anyone has any questions!

    Working Together Slide

Each person is unique in their own way.? They may???

    ????????? Talk different than you?

    ????????? Act different than you?

    ????????? Learn different than you?

????????? Have different interests/opinions than you

We want you to feel comfortable while you are at?work.? Please??

    ????????? Respect each other??

????????? Understand that you are all different and have?different life experiences and opinions??

????????? Share concerns you have with your supervisor?

    All the joy,

    Kait
