This is a tricky one…as I don’t think I ever was trained to be/do what I do on a day to day basis. I was fortunate enough to have an assistantship in graduate school, that was in Event Management that had a team of students who did setups in the building. So I guess my skillset continued to grow from there. I was also a student supervisor in undergrad. So I’ve always had the supervision in my responsibilities, but it was always something I just did.?

My institution does not offer much on student supervision, besides maybe an HR toolkit course that you can click through, but I’m not sure that exists anymore. To stay current, I try to plug into this community as much as I can. I listen to the news to see what current events are affecting the communities around me, I try to skim Inside Higher Edu, and other publications like the Chronicle. Sometimes it is just enough to listen to the students that I work with to hear what they are dealing with on the ground, and the world around them.?

This is a tricky one – I’d be open to hearing about how others received the training or developed the skills to be a supervisor.

Hi Kim!?

This is a great question! While I don’t remember receiving any direct “training” on being a student supervisor when I started overseeing students as a graduate student, I did receive some outside help. My mom (who has run her own business for over 20 years) gave me a book called “It’s Okay to be the Boss” shortly after I started working at Temple. It’s a really silly title, I know, but it gave me a lot of great ideas about how to manage other people such as:?
– Having frequent, informal 1-1 conversation with every (Yes, every) staff member?
– Giving constructive feedback to staff frequently so it becomes normal and not scary
– Rewarding staff who are doing a great job in ways that are individual to them?

These are still principles I use every day and I hope to create training materials based on these ideas for our student managers. I also learned a lot from the supervisors around me (especially you, Kim) such as creating a 1:1 notebook with sections for each staff member so you have a place to jot down notes throughout the week and from meetings. Very interested to see if other schools have specific training or materials that I can steal!

Hi, I imagine my answer is probably similar to others. I was not “trained” how to supervise student employees, I definitely did this on my own.  I did not have any academic courses in supervision but in my pursuit of wanting to know as much as possible I take advantage of whatever resources I can. This would include education sessions at conferences, a Student Supervisor Academy we recently had at our institution (Thanks Kim!),  reading ACUI chat forums and of course online research. As a departmental team we often share what works/doesn’t work or whether we want to try something new but the biggest piece, for me to know what is working or not, is how my students respond. I learn this through one-on-ones, evaluations and just plain conversations!
