Student Employees Testing Out of Training

So I’ve been bouncing around the idea of rethinking how I do training.? I have about 5 returning student employees that I would trust our union with if I was out of the country on vacation…it got me thinking, why would I have them sit through allllll of our training in August.? I know that I want them to be a part of the teambuilding and icebreakers that we do and of course need to share any updates with them.??

Has anyone allowed their returning staff test out of certain sessions of training?? I just don’t want to waste my students’ time, my time, or our budget to have them learning things they already know and are mastered at.? I have also used returning staff to help train new staff so that they are a part of the training instead of sitting through it.??

Look forward to hearing your thoughts!!

    Hi Chrissie,?
At Temple. we break training into New Hire and Returning. The first day or 2 days is just new hires (with some returners to help lead sessions) which covers all of our onboarding and basic job training. Then we will do one day of training for everyone (new hires and returners) which includes any updates, teambuilding, emergency procedures etc. Good luck with your planning!?

    Hi Chrissie,

I am newer to the union world, but I have some thoughts based on my time in Residence Life. We had two “tracks” for our RAs, new and returning. While the returning track was not drastically different from new training, we did allow them to skip some of the more redundant sessions that had no changes from the previous year. The returners appreciated this as it was not a waste of their time to hear information they already knew. We did not have any performance issues based on them not coming to those sessions, so it worked well for us to have the two tracks!?

I also used my returner RAs as leaders in training sessions rather than have me or someone else present the information they already know to them. They always seemed to enjoy that as well. I never made them do it but gave them the opportunity and nobody ever told me no. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn leadership skills!?

We do exactly what Brook has done. We had our 4 supervisors lead the entire training. I worked with them throughout the summer via Teams meetings to break up the schedule and produce a curriculum for each session.

Your training is also about team building.? Using your skilled students to lead sessions ensures that they are part of the team and new employees get to know them.? Added benefit: if they are leading some of the training, you are free to observe, noting who is engaged and who is not.
