Required Uniforms for Building Staff – how do you enforce?

We have struggled with holding our student staff accountable to wearing the required uniform. This is especially a challenge in the colder season when they want to layer up. As part of general staff expectations, they are required to wear a short sleeve polo or long-sleeve quarter zip along with pretty much whatever pants/shorts as long as they are not “athleisure” or intentional torn. Any suggestions on how you hold your staff accountable to uniform policies?

Hey there Katie!? So I have more issues with name tags, which I haven’t figured out, but for the most part, uniforms have been okay.? We also are able to provide our staff with a short sleeve polo and a Campus Center fleece, so that they can wear that when it’s colder out.? The only other thing that we allow is for folks to wear something under the polo.? If folks are not in uniform, they get a verbal warning and then written warning.? If it was something that was excessive, I would terminate them or not bring them back the next semester.?

    Hi Katie,

Are you having trouble getting them to wear the polo/quarter zip or with the rest of their outfit?

We were having a really difficult time getting our student staff to wear their uniform daily and it was a losing battle we found we were spending too much energy on.? We compromised by creating “mandatory apparel days”.? They are provided with a list of dates at the beginning of each semester that they must wear their uniform on.? The list usually includes high-profile or large events, like Homecoming and visits from the Board of Trustees.? They are still encouraged to wear their apparel daily, but they are only subject to discipline if they don’t wear it on the mandatory dates.??

This has allowed us to cut back our apparel budget.? We were giving them three pieces of apparel (two polos and a quarter zip) but have cut it back to two this year and will go down to just one next year.? It isn’t an ideal situation, but we have found that they are happier with this policy and it has saved us from having daily conversations about it.? We still have our general dress code (no hats, no inappropriate tees, no ripped pants, etc.) but we have far fewer issues with that.

We’ve also struggled with this concern this year as well. More at our Information Desk, our Building Managers haven’t seemed to struggle with it as much.?

Something that we did last year that has helped rising discontent around polos was to change the uniform code to require school colors/school apparel instead of just the polo and quarter zip. Similar to Kathleen, we still require Building Managers to wear polos on certain days (Career Fair, Board of Regents), but they are only required to wear them during those days if they want to. Like Kathleen, this did help in some ways reducing the amount of money spent on apparel, though we did still supply a t-shirt and sweatshirt. We also have red vests that are stored in our back hallway that anyone can swipe if they need apparel.

That being said, we still receive some frustration from students around having to wear school colors. We try to talk to students about it when we see it, but it’s hard to manage every day as some students have shorter shifts where a pro staff might not see them.

We provide our staff with One Polo, One Short sleeve Tee and one Fleece. All staff must wear one of those items along with their nametags at all times. If they fail to dress in the appropriate manner, they are written up and sent home to change clothes. This was an issue earlier in my tenure at Emory. To get their attention, I had to be nitpicky on everything which worked in the long run.

We provide all staff with Armstrong Student Center t-shirts, long sleeves and now a crew neck sweatshirt (they were so cold!). We are no longer ordering Polos because we find them to not be size friendly/inclusive and most students just hate them (as does our office), so we are just handing the rest out to people who want them. We don’t have an issue with name tags, they are surprisingly good about those, but we do sometimes have an issue with folks looking like they rolled out of bed, so we’re thinking of ways to address that. Below are our guidelines from our Shared Expectations guide (which is shared between our Building Managers, Event Production, Ambassadors, Commuter Center Assistants, and RedZone Gaming desk staff). We also reserve the right to change these for specific events. Huge conference coming through this week, everyone must be in ASC gear for shifts Wednesday through Saturday. Admissions days, Orientation, big donor events, etc, fall under that.?

We did a module in summer 2022 on policies, expectations and how white supremacy and patriarchy show up in these areas. So we changed out some of expectations to not come from a deficit model and instead use ‘you can’ ‘you should’ and be positive, wherever possible, and to put those items first.? ?

    Dress Code

    • You can wear

    • ASC Apparel, Miami Apparel, Recognized Student Organization Apparel, Business Casual Clothing

    • ASC Apparel should be given priority when working, but if you are wearing clothes that are dressier than that then you may wear them during shifts (ex. If wearing a suit you don’t need to change)

    • Event shifts (EPT) should prioritize ASC apparel, then general Miami apparel.

    • Pants should have minimal distress (they should be 90% intact, holes at knees, small distressing okay)?

    • Closed toed shoes with closed backs should be worn by all employees?

    • Nametags
  • You can not wear

    • Other school apparel?

    • Apparel that depicts drinking, green beer day, smoking, and/or drug use?

    • Athletic or jean shorts?

    • Hats or hoods may not be worn (head coverings for religious purposes are permitted)

    • Shorts, unless given explicit permission for specific events?

  • Set Shifts

    • Closed toed shoes with backs

    • Pants (preferably jeans or thick pants over legging)

    • All tops should follow all rules, if it is a set that you will be visible to clients you should be wearing ASC apparel??

    • Nametags
