Hi Allison!?
I’m excited to hear you’ll be in Denver because I have two ed sessions to share with you that will give you an idea of how our department does year-long professional development (and tracking growth) as well as training.?
RISE: A Comprehensive Student Staff Evaluation Experience
Sykes Union and Student Activities created and launched RISE: Rams Integrating Skills and Education, a new student-staff evaluation experience that tracks students’ growth throughout their employment with our unit. Join members of the team as they discuss the creative process while reviewing the program in depth and providing tools for how to adapt this for your student staff.
Using Creativity to Enhance Student Engagement & Development: A New Paraprofessional Training Model
It is the responsibility of student union professionals to create a robust and engaging student development curriculum that strives to provide student employees with an environment that fosters the necessary transferable skills students need to be successful post-graduation. This presentation looks at one specific part of a student development curriculum, pre-semester student staff training. Training is essential for any job, but an engaging and impactful training is what we should be striving for. This training model looks to use creative means to meet our students where they are at to increase engagement, self-efficacy, and also build a sense of belonging within the department and the university. Important highlights include the influence of a long-term student development program, flipped learning, and gamification.
In this session, you can ask my colleagues Jayna and Meg how we track who completes the online learning modules and how we track in-person attendance and completion across multiple service areas.?
I hope this helps!?
Warmly,
Adriane

Subject: How do you assess competencies and track training for student employees?
Hi folks! We are in the process of finishing our evaluation and promotion cycle, and one area that our students consistently mention that needs improvement is training. We have 15 different positions under 6 supervisors within 5 operational areas. That means that training isn’t consistent across all positions, and this is something we are focusing on improving this summer.
One thing I’ve always struggled with is tracking who has completed what training and what competencies each student has successfully demonstrated. We use moodle, but we have not had great success tracking training there without it becoming an overly complicated and time consuming endeavor. We are looking for alternatives, preferably without the need for additional software or a subscription. Does anyone feel like they’ve really conquered this and would be willing to share your secrets to success?
Thanks for your help in advance. If you’d prefer to answer me directly, you can email me at acvanden@ncsu.edu. I will also be at ACUI in Denver next week and would love to meet up if you think you have the magic solution!
