1:1 discussion topics for student managers
Posted by ckelly1 on January 31, 2023 at 10:13 amGood morning!
We are finally able to add in some target 1:1 time with members of our student leadership, but I was curious if you all had some common topics or formats that you like to cover/follow or encourage your students managers to discuss during 1:1’s. Currently, I’m hoping to use it as an opportunity to talk to them about training topics they may need help on, encourage them to think about a win or an experience they learned from, personal development goals, as well as open ended discussion for them to use as they want. Eventually, we plan to move back to our managers assisting with projects in which case it would be an updates meeting as well.?
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Hi Colleen,
Funny enough, I actually came to this thread looking for insight on this exact topic. Our current 1:1 format for all student employees sounds similar to yours; not sure how yours is but ours is pretty unstructured, with the sole intention of hitting on 4 aspects of our students’ lives: academics, extracurriculars, work, and personal. Of course they don’t have to discuss certain things if they choose not to, but we try to leave opportunity for us to make sure our students are doing well holistically and for them to have the space to talk with someone if needed. Our struggle, especially for the non-manager positions, is the lack of engagement everywhere, even in the 1:1 setting, and the lack of structure/open-endedness doesn’t seem to be helping the matter. Would also love to get feedback on this topic and see what others are doing that is working, for both managers and non-managers!

At the moment no, but it may be something I develop as the semester goes on. Right now I’ve just been organically asking them questions and allowing time for feedback from them as well as from me if items have occurred recently.?

We do the same, Colleen. It’s hard because the organic nature of it really works for some but really does not work for others. I think a form would be a good idea but not sure where to start or how to make it most effective.

Hi there!? So at this time, I do not do any 1:1’s with my staff, although I pretty much talk to all 20 of them while on shift throughout the week.? I do have mid-semester check-ins with each of my staff, where I am asking them to self-evaluate based on the learning outcomes that we have for our student employment program.? I’ve attached that…we also included some questions based off of the University of Iowa Grow, https://studentlife.uiowa.edu/initiatives/iowa-grow%C2%AE/ .? If I was creating a 1:1 agenda, it would be something that I would break into the sections you want to hit on: happy moment of the week, rough moment of the week, something new they are looking to learn.? You could really make anything you need.? I would make sure to share the agenda with the students ahead of time so that they are prepared when they come in.? Unfortunately, there’s just some folks that don’t open up!? I try to find out their likes and base conversations on those likes.??

Chrissie,
I like that idea! Are 1:1s something you’ve done in the past and moved away from because you found it wasn’t quite working? What led you to your current check-in/1:1 system? Curious what you did before or the improvements you found from your current system!

I have done them in the past but with full time staff members, but when I tried them with student employees, I just did not get any connection, even trying to change up the agenda so that they brought homework to it.? I have found that being intentional in my conversations with each individual has been a bigger success.??

Hey Colleen,
Our division of Student Life is also using our version of the Iowa GROW. We have an agreement with Iowa GROW to use their developed questions and use our university designed branding (https://www.elon.edu/u/spdc/elon-grow-guided-reflection-on-work-resources/) We have two check-ins with our front/information desk staff (form attached). One check-in is after fall break the other after spring break. Our student managers discuss, with their management team, both the Elon GROW and check-in form. Happy to discuss our process. bcarlton@elon.edu

Julie, Both check-ins happen mid way through the semesters. If we waited until the end of both semesters, our students would be “mentally” checked out and we would struggle getting them completed.?
