    Dear ACUI community:

We at the Illini Union Board at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are working on creating an "i-shirt." This would be a student-designed shirt with a new design every year (and would hopefully be a source of revenue). We are hoping to create a tradition around this, and I would like to learn more about other schools who have something similar.

    A few questions:
    • Who is responsible for designing the t-shirts each year?
    • How do you spread the word about the t-shirts that help make it a yearly tradition?
    • Where and when do you typically begin selling t-shirts?
    • What is the overall timeline – from creation to sale?
    • How much do you typically sell them for?
    • What is the best strategy for selling the shirts? Is there a specific time and day that is best?

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
     Asako

    A few questions:

    ·                     Who is responsible for designing the t-shirts each year? Our graphics team in the student union.

    ·                     How do you spread the word about the t-shirts that help make it a yearly tradition? We have a t-shirt wall that shows all of the designs we have done over the years. It becomes part of our storytelling.

    ·                     Where and when do you typically begin selling t-shirts? We don’t sell them. We give them away for free.

    ·                     What is the overall timeline – from creation to sale? A couple of months and we don’t sell them.

    ·                     How much do you typically sell them for? Free.

    • What is the best strategy for selling the shirts? Is there a specific time and day that is best? Consider getting corporate sponsors with incentives.

One more question, have you talked with your campus bookstore about this?? They are a tremendous resource and partner for these types of programs.

    Hi Elizabeth,

At Missouri State, we do something very similar called our “Be A Bear” shirt. Ours is organized and ran by our bookstore and serves as a fundraiser for our emergency scholarship fund. The creation for these shirts is done as a contest in which students submit original designs and two are selected to be voted on by the campus community; whichever wins goes on that year’s shirt. The contest begins in December, ends in January, and shirts are available after spring break until homecoming. Ours are always $19.05 — the year of our founding. They are always advertised in our bookstore, associated stores around campus (our bookstore also runs convenience stores with snacks and things), and on multiple social media accounts throughout the university, including the main university pages, alumni pages, student organizations, etc. Definitely recommend reaching out to your bookstore for help because if they’re anything like ours, they would be a great partner.
