The Path Of Totality!
Posted by Scott Casanova on January 29, 2024 at 11:34 amHi Everyone,
Not sure how many institutions here this applies to but we happen to be in the path of totality for the April 8th solar eclipse.? There’s a growing sense of “we should be doing something” from different parts of campus, does anyone have anything planned on your campus that you’d be willing to share what you’re doing? Thanks!

Scott,
We are close but not in the direct path of totality. We have a planetarium on campus; they will host a show that day. Our library is contributing glasses. We plan to have a few telescopes (with appropriate safety precautions), make pinhold finders, do a sun paper craft, have a moon/sun playlist, eat Oreo cookies in the moon’s phases, etc. Other snacks we are looking at having include sun chips, Sunkist, moon pies, cosmic brownies, star crunches, Sunny D, Sunmaid items, and Capri Sun. We are hoping to use our football field and live stream the eclipse on our jumbotron as well.
I hope this helps spark some ideas!

Hi!We are also in the path of totality! Here is the link to what our town is doing. It includes our campus items as well. https://www.cityofoxford.org/_T27_R114.phpWe do a lot of town/gown programming combined in the Uptown Park on a regular basis, so this is an extra special group effort. There are lectures with faculty that are open to the public, no tickets. A huge festival, events at the art museum, and special community watch parties.

Miami University carries the name of the Myaamia people who, along with the Shawnee, were forcibly removed from these homelands. Despite centuries of colonization, the Myaamia people preserve a deep connection to this land and are engaged in a vibrant resurgence of their heritage language and culture.
The university maintains a strong reciprocal relationship with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma grounded in our shared commitment to learning and each other.

I haven’t heard anything about my campus which is a little bit north of the path, but my alma mater, Arkansas Tech, is in the path of totality and they have a lot happening for the eclipse (I’m actually going to visit since it lands immediately after my birthday). They have t-shirts for pre-order, renting spaces to view the eclipse for people visiting the area for the event, and much more! I’m linking a few resources that can detail everything they’re doing much better in partnership with the city of Russellville.
I was in grad school last time it happened and we had a small gathering at the center of campus to view with people as part of Welcome Week activities. Lots of fun and cool to see the way the shadows appeared on the sidewalks and through the trees event though it was only partial there at that time.

Hello!
We are in Cleveland Ohio, and we are located right in the center of the totality. We have been meeting with various groups to consolidate information about all the different events that students, campus groups, and the community are planning for this event. Rather than having a single event, we are trying to become a hub for information about all the events that will be taking place. We have managed to secure speakers from NASA, student performers, pinhole making stations, and food for the event.
It is important to note that some universities that were in the path of the eclipse in 2017 faced a number of problems. For instance, some of the glasses they bought were not ISO certified and could have caused injuries if not detected in time. Additionally, road closures due to congestion caused people to die while stuck in traffic inside ambulances. Schools didn’t drop students home until many hours later (K-12). Therefore, it is crucial that your university has discussed their plans with the city or emergency management team to avoid such issues.
Hope this helps,
