Hi Sarah,
We have been operating under the understanding that state law prohibits use of university property for commercial sales (although there has been some recent debate about that interpretation) so we do not permit individuals or businesses to sell things inside or outside unless they are contracted with the university as an approved vendor or occasionally as part of an event like a merch table at a concert. Student organizations may do craft sales or other things but they are nonprofit organizations. We also organize biannual art marts in our building but those artists need to have an affiliation with our Workspace arts and crafts studio (staff or instructors) and we get a portion of the sales to support our art programs.

Subject: Student Maker Sales Events (Craft Fairs, Art Markets, Resale Pop-ups, etc.)
Hello ACUI! We are fielding more regular requests for craft and merchandise vendor events, where the sellers are students and not necessarily affiliated with a formally established business (ex: hobby print screeners, jewelry makers, thrift and vintage re-sellers, etc.). I’m curious to learn:
- Are these kinds of events allowed within your reservable space(s)? Indoor, outdoor, both?
- If yes, what kind of policy language do you have regarding sales and vending?
Happy to hear any other information that might be insightful!
