Hello! I’m a graduate assistant currently working with my student activities department to update our policies. I have a quick question for those involved in student activities:?

When student organizations host late-night events (like parties, etc., that may include alcohol), who is typically staffed at these programs on your campus??

Thank you all for your insights

Hi there Marvin!? At our institution, the folks responsible for the event depends on the the event and its components.? Each night, I have graduate students working, so they are on shift.? They are only responsible for checking in on the event that it’s going well and there aren’t issues.? They may also become time-checkers, if we feel the event is going to end late.? They are not responsible for being inside the event the entire time.? If our police department feels that the event needs to have security or police added to it, they will add them on.? Factors that may cause this include having external guests, having cash on hand, having a DJ, expecting a large crowd.? Our student orgs are not permitted to host events with alcohol.? Every once in a while, the student orgs’ advisor may be present, but it’s not mandated.??

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

At Wentworth Institute of Technology, we require at least the advisor (or other professional or graduate staff proxy) to attend the event. We also have requirements for student volunteers who may need to be TIPS trained if alcohol is served, but at the very least we require at least one staff member. The director of the office that advises the student groups can require additional staff, such as students from area schools attending the event.?
