Streaming content in your studnet union

    Hello Friends,

Does anybody have a streaming service in your student center that allows for commercial use?

We’re looking into streaming March Madness games/having some watch parties in our student union, and our business cable account doesn’t have streaming available. We have to be plugged into a jack to get games, and we are limited in where we can plug in.

I’ve looked at YouTube TV and Sling, and their terms of use do not allow for commercial use. Thus we can’t just sign up for an account and show content anywhere in the building.  What do you all do in these circumstances?

    Thanks,

We are also actively seeking a solution! I’d love to hear what others are doing.  I had Sling on my list to look into but now thinking maybe that isn’t an option based on what you said about commercial use.

We are looking into streaming right from ncaa.com. This may be the solution. General Counsel is reviewing terms of service.

    Hi Jennifer,

Our Housing department uses Spectrum to provide streaming service for our on-campus residents. We were able to get physical cable service into our Union through that, along with a departmental login for streaming when needed through the SpectrumU app (available on AppleTV, Roku’s, laptops, etc). We verified in our contract that public use rights were allowed and the only stipulation is that we can’t insert our own commercials or skip commercials.

Not sure if any of that helps your situation, but it’s what we use here!

Our Spectrum business contract does not allow for streaming. However, in discussing the issue with our general counsel, they have advised that using a streaming service for a free watch party would not constitute commercial use because we are not charging for the event.? Thus we will likely buy a subscription to something and stream through ncaa.com.

        Hello!

I would love to bring this topic back up and hear if anyone has a solution.? Cable is no longer an option for us so we are looking for a solution for a few reasons: TV’s playing in our union, groups wanting to show governmental debates at events, etc.??

          Hi All,

Our General Counsel advised us that streaming content in our union would not fall under commercial use because we are not charging admission.  Thus, our plan was going to be that I would purchase a streaming service (let’s say YouTube TV), set up an account, which would have to be personal. We’d plug a laptop into a screen and show the game in our union.

I would consult with your general counsel office to see how they interpret the terms of service for a streaming platform, but our OGC gave us the green light to proceed as noted above.

          Best,
