Hi Colleen,

 

We use SICO tri-height risers.  They are 4′ x 8′ and are height adjustable between 18″, 24″, and 30″, and they fold up pretty easily for moving and storing, and they lock together when set up. We mostly use the 18″ height, and the skirting and stairs we have are good for both 18″ and 24″.  They have a reversible deck system with a black laminate on one side and carpeting on the other.  They offer some color options for the carpeting. They also have a ramp system for accessibility which we have purchased as well.  That’s a little more involved to set up but it fits together well and we’ve gotten lots of compliments from our patrons that have needed that accommodation.

 

We have 24 in our inventory and have had most of them for going on 18 years. They’re still in great shape  SICO’s customer service has been great on the rare occasions we’ve needed parts.  The biggest challenge we have with them is moving and storing the step units because they don’t break down unless you completely take them apart.  They have wheels but they’re a little awkward to move and they don’t first through a standard size door.  If you have wider or double doors you’ll be fine.  Aside from that we’ve had to replace a couple of the nuts that hold the deck bolts in place because of the way they are mounted but it’s maybe one or two a year.  The only other curveball  we’ve gotten was the carpeting color.  Our initial order was for 18 for our Schine Student Center, and the subsequently ordered 6 more for our Skybarn (stand alone event facility).  I don’t recall how much time passed between the two orders but by the time we placed the second order that carpet color of our initial order was no longer available.  We were able to get something similar and it hasn’t been an issue anyway because we very rarely need to combine the inventories and we use the black laminate for most events anyway.

Under the idea of buy once, cry once- Im going to recommend the SC90 from Sightline.? When we purchased ours 20 years ago, it was owned by Staging Concepts.? I dont believe there has been a dip in quality- though im not 100% on that.? We bought a huge inventory of them and we can build large stages between 12″ and 54″ high.? They are extremely robust.? Ours gets used indoors, outdoors and even in cattle barns.? We hit them with a pressure washer once every 2 years and they look far younger than 20 years old. We make a good amount of income from our staging and it is used frequently.? Our staff is quite rough with our staging equipment and I’ve only seen 2 pieces break- neither catastrophic.? They are however extremely heavy. Each deck is around 150lbs, but they hold about anything. I think they have some other solutions now that may help with portability – tip and roll type solution.? I know several rental houses in my area carry the same product which is handy the few times we run out of a particular part on busy weeks.

Hi Colleen,

As you can see, there are a lot of really good portable staging options: StageRight, SICO, Sightline.  I’m going to suggest another: Wenger.  We purchased Wenger StageTek staging a year ago when we opened our Student Center.  Although only a year into it, we are very happy with Wenger.  It’s rugged, portable (not as portable as fold and roll), and economical.  We found Wenger a relatively low-cost option compared to the other well-known staging brands.  Plus, our music school has used Wenger for years with good success.  Happy to discuss further offline if you’d like.
