    Hi all:

I was having a conversation with one of our SGA student members and they are considering looking at making our campus tobacco free! I was curious if anyone has had any experience with this and what that process looked like. Additionally, I’ve not worked with SGA in the past and wasn’t sure the best direction to advise them on in terms of staring a petition, gaining interest, etc. So, open to any and all feedback/advice! I also shared that the student could connect with their advisor as well but if I can share some information I’m happy to help them.?

Feel free to post here for others or email me! (ckolb@wcupa.edu)?

Hey Clayton – PSU went through this process in the 90s and then re-affirmed it in the early 2000’s and you can find a timeline of the campus advocacy here: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/DISEASESCONDITIONS/CHRONICDISEASE/HPCDPCONNECTION/Documents/success_stories/policy_su_multnomah.pdf . From what I can tell our student government wasn’t involved with the advocacy for creation of this policy in a major way though they may have had a representative on the initial committee looking at this as a possibility. The above link mentions a few different tactics including surveying, a committee to look at best practices/implementation of similar policies at schools similar to your own, and partnership with internal/external health organizations among other things which could be helpful to your student government. You could also have them pose a survey or a referendum to the student body to garner interest/gather information from students or have them start an ad-hoc committee. There may be a few different routes they could go. Hope this helps!

Hi Clayton, Oregon State University went smoke-free in 2015.? Our student government was supportive but the heavy lift was done by a collaborative group of staff, graduate students and faculty. ?https://hr.oregonstate.edu/feature/smoke-free-campus-policy-enjoys-wide-support
