    Hi All,

We are looking at a space in our union where staff/students can go to destress, relax, chill out for a bit. Perhaps there are reclining chairs. Perhaps there is a noise machine with soothing sounds.  We are not fully sure what we would put in it, and so I am wondering if any of you have spaces like this in your student unions and what you have in that space.

We’re not sure what we’d call it exactly either. Just brainstorming at this juncture.

    Hey Dr. Reid,
Take a look at our Oasis Center at Cal State Northridge.
The Oasis is a welcoming destination where CSUN students can find serenity and relaxation amid the rush and activity of campus life.

There’s data that support the added value of a space like this. I hope that this sparks some thoughts.

      Good morning,
Here at The University of New Mexico, the Student Union partnered with Student Health and Counseling to create a space just like the one you are describing. We have it set up so students can reserve ahead of time or drop in if it is free. We have named it Lobo Oasis. Student gain access through a proxy card . This way we can ensure the students get the private isolated time needed. Within the space there is an ADA stretching table, foam roller, yoga mat and a nice large chair. We also have resources for them inside the space for health and other resource centers.
      Hope this helps!
      best,

    Hi Jennifer!

In our student union we have the Sensory Room. Bean bags, soft lighting, sound machines, fidgets, yoga mats, etc. I’ve attached an Instagram post below with some photos and a brief description. We opened the room last year by taking one of our small meeting rooms out of rotation. We were able to partner with our Student Government Association to cover some of the start-up costs of the room.

We have a room at our Union South with carpeted floor, pillows and low, cushioned seating. Windows are tinted and the lights are kept low. We monitor the room periodically to make sure people aren’t sleeping or eating in there.

It is often used for prayers, and often by Muslim students. We just installed a foot washing station nearby for those whose prayer traditions include that practice.

    Jennifer,

Stony Brook University's Student Accessibility Support Center has created several sensory spaces across campus.

One of the student publications recently featured an article about one of the newest spaces (here), which I'm also sharing, as images of this space are not yet included on the department's website and I think it most closely resembles what you described. These spaces are wonderful!

The Health Educator, Megan Johnston, LSW, at Ramapo College of New Jersey provided me the following to share with everyone:

Ramapo College opened our Wellness Room in December 2023 and was created with grant funds from the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education. We do have a white noise machine in the room. The biggest draw is the massage chair, which reclines, massages, and has pulsing compression for arms and legs. Other materials in the space include: a large bean bag chair, a weighted blanket, yoga mats, a snack/tea station with chamomile and lavender tea, mental health pamphlets, coloring books designed for relaxation and coloring materials, bracelet making materials, bubble wrap for students to pop, and a variety of fidget toys. You can learn more about the relaxation programs and other resources in the space here:?https://www.ramapo.edu/health-promotion/wellness-room/

If anyone wants to be connected with Megan directly, let me know.
