Hi Aubrey, at Indiana community members can be involved, but only students can hold the leadership positions. Our policy (selected portions) states:?
- [Self-Governed Student Organizations] must have a minimum of five members who are enrolled students at the IU campus.
- SGSOs must have officers who are enrolled students at the IU campus.
- The control and operation of the SGSO must remain with the students. Voting privileges may be granted only to?enrolled students at the IU campus.
We’ve had a couple of groups encounter issues with community member involvement, and I think it boiled down to a lack of defined expectations within their governing documents. They didn’t have any processes outlined for how to address issues that came up. Our recommendation would be that groups anticipating involvement by community members should establish some parameters and expectations before issues arise.?

Subject: Non-student members in student organizations
As a public institution, we have many local community members engaging with our campus. Recently, we have had student organizations ask our office (student engagement and leadership) whether or not they are permitted to have non-student members participate in their student organizations. We are exploring this area and wondering how others handle it. One guideline we have is that only SRU students can be the beneficiaries of SGA funding, so any giveaways, prizes, events paid for with SGA funding, etc. must only be open to current students. However, if other funding is used their are no concrete guidelines. Additionally, some clubs address this in their constitution and by-laws, while many do not. How does your campus approach this and how do you rely the policy to students?
