    Hello,?

I wanted to inquire about if you all have your student staff (event staff, game room staff, building staff, office staff, etc.) wear name tags/badges when they are on shift. We have found that our student staff have either lost their name tags or are not wearing them. Our current style have magnetic strips which cause them to easily fall off and on the administrative end, they are expensive to replace. The text is also very small so no one can read them anyways.?

Our newest thought is to get breakaway lanyards with name badges that can include the staff’s name, pronouns, and working area. I noticed a lot of staff areas around our campus do not have student staff wearing name tags since the uniforms already list the department on them.?

My question to you all is, do your student staff members wear name tags/badges? If not, what made you move away from them? If you do have design for lanyard badges that work well, are you able to share them with me?

I know this seems like such a simple thing but has been a huge discussion in our department.?

    Thanks,

In Campus Life at UMBC, our staff wears nametags. We have a magnetic board for them to leave the tags at the end of their shift.
We purchase blank nametags with the school logo from the Cawley Company, and then use a label maker to add the names (so they are in a nice, large font). The badges/magnets are sturdy so they don’t fall off.?
I’ve always felt lanyards are a safety hazard (especially for Operations staff who have to lift and move things).

    Hi Kelly,

At my previous institution, we used to keep the nametags on-site in a drawer at their workstation. That way they don’t forget or lose them, and we all knew where they were located. I hope this helps an good luck!

Some of our student work areas keep nametags on a white board or cabinet door for easy on-site access too (we use that magnet-backed style).

Personally I still advocate for our student staff to wear nametags. It helps our full-time staff out tremendously (there are 15 of us but 200+ of them!), and sometimes if they are wearing a coat or heavier layer over their uniform piece, that nametag may be the only thing that distinguishes them as a staff member rather than a student visitor.?

I know our students sometimes see that identification as a liability, rather than an asset.
I’m team nametag until I retire!

Hi there Kelly!? I have to agree with Jeff that as long as I’m supervising students, they will have nametags.? It makes it easy for people to identify them if they need help and completes their uniform.? We used to do something similar to what Gina does, where you get a nametag and use the label maker…then Cawley was not an approved vendor anymore for our university.? Sooooo…we have a button maker and I had my graphic guy create a nametag and my staff wears a button with their name and pronouns on it.? We left the department off because that is on the shirt.? It’s the cheapest option for us, because we already have the button maker supplies.

    Hello,
Our entire team is required to wear name tags.? My student workers have been trained since day one to take their tag off at the end of their shift and “stick” it to the desk leg (it’s magnetic).? This has been pretty successful for my team so they don’t take them home and leave them there or lose them.? Regarding the lettering, that would be a conversation with your badge provider.? Maybe they can recreate a better design for you.

    Hello Everyone,

Many of the positions within the Center for Student Involvement at Ramapo College of New Jersey are based in an office or desk, so we transitioned to name placards at their work station. Certainly this doesn’t work if someone is doing rounds or doing an event set up or staffing an event, but for our game room, information desk main office, and a number of other parts of our office these work well. They are branded, have larger print, and include pronouns.

      Hi Kelly,

At the University of Vermont Student Center we do require our student staff to wear their name tags. We use the magnetic type and we switched a while ago to a lighter type of name tag which seems to be working and the student staff are happy with them and they stay on very well.

      Good luck with your decision,
