How do you balance Social Justice with Administrative Decisions?
Hello everyone,
As campus leaders, how do you balance social justice and student engagement with campus administrative decisions??
Inside Higher Ed published an article today about the new president at University of Florida, US Senator Ben Sasse. Mr. Sasse is currently a US Senator and a former university president for Lutheran college in Nebraska. He was also the sole finalist in the university’s search for a president. The student response was swift. They organized a protest and demonstrations on campus in opposition to the administration’s decision. During an open forum, students asked Mr. Sasse about his stance on LGBTQ safety on campus as well as abortion rights.
From the article, “Rachel Hartnett, co-president of the Graduate Assistant Union at UF, said the demonstration was just a taste of what Sasse could expect from the UF community if he took the job.”
Student activism at UF and around the country sharpens my focus on our ACUI strategic guidepost to: Advance campus community through social justice and education to empower marginalized identities and to overcome racism and anti-Blackness.
Be well,——————————
