Looking for tools/resources to use with student and FT staff on the differences between free speech and hate speech. As union professionals, at times we may be faced with servicing groups that do not espouse the values of our institution. How have you addressed this issue with your teams?

    Susan,

As you mentioned, this is a difficult topic to tackle. As such, there is no magic way to go about it. It is necessary to muddle through it. I have presented on the topic at the regional level and at the annual conference with mixed results. I think the first place I would start is at ACUI’s Active Dialogue Work Group report. The next thing I would suggest is focusing on definitions. Focus on what the First Amendment says. Focus on what hate speech is. Does WI have a hate speech statute? Lastly, I would suggest a conversation about how student affairs professionals have to walk a line between student advocacy and being institutional agents. As such, we must serve all students and not just the ones we like and agree with.

As you can see, this is a complex issue and I have not found a single resource that fits perfectly to the multiple dimensions a conversation of this magnitude necessitates?

Attached is a quick one-page overview, created by Chapman’s Office of the Dean of Students, that guides our Student Affairs philosophy when it comes to intersections of diversity/inclusion and free speech.? More info can be found here.

Reach out to your campus legal resource.  Both campuses where I  worked had lawyers who worked with me and others to craft free speech policies and procedures.

    Hi Susan,

Here is link to the Canva presentation I do to train the Building Managers on Free Speech during onboarding. We usually talk about political season as it ramps up around elections during our weekly meetings too.

I also use a packet from a 2018 Campus Free Speech Training Guide from PaperClip Communications. I can’t share it electronically, but on their website here it looks like they have slightly updated versions of the guide as samples that can be downloaded here?by clicking the “click here to view sample pages” link.?

Please let me know if there are any questions from the materials! Some of the points in the presentation are talking points rather than the entirety of what I say in the actual training session.

      Hi everyone,

Deanna – thank you so much for sharing your presentation! I will definitely reference that in the future.

I looked on NC State’s website but wasn’t able to find anything like a training or a succinct document to reference. However, NC State does have a webpage that goes into great detail about freedom of speech, hate speech, what’s protected, what isn’t, how freedom of speech applies to speakers on campus, what the University can and cannot do to regulate speech, how the University responds to hate speech, protestors’ rights, appropriate use of University space, etc. It is very thorough.

We often have to educate students, staff, and guests in the Union about Freedom of Speech and how we can and cannot respond. We had a banner in our Union for the Satanic Club a few years ago, and it happened to be up and visible during an event when a lot of parents were on campus. Our Information Assistants and some professional staff had to talk to a lot of angry parents and educate them on why that banner could stay up despite their vehement demands to remove it. We anticipated backlash before it was hung and briefed our student and professional staff ahead of time on what to say if questioned.

Prior to other events when we expect a protest, questions about Freedom or Speech, or a different but vocal response, we will brief the students and staff working during that event on what to expect and how to respond if needed. I can’t recall if we have any specific documentation (and I can’t find any right now but will continue looking), but we also work with University Police, Academic & Student Affairs, and other departments across campus to coordinate responses. Our approach is usually event-specific, but I think an overall explanation of Freedom of Speech is a valuable learning opportunity for our teams.

I’d be interested to see what you come up with, Susan. Thanks for starting this!
