Displaying Student Art Work
Posted by Kimberly Roenn-Devney on February 23, 2024 at 11:00 amHello!
We are looking into displaying student created artwork in our Union. Has anyone done this in their student Union and what guidelines do you follow? Do you rotate your displays every semester? Is there a way to keep the artwork safe?
Thanks for any guidance!

To keep things safe: Locked display cases, pictures of art digitally displayed, a polite but visible sign indicating that cameras and/or recording is part of the safety aspect of the art work.Yes to monthly and/or semesterly rotation..

Hi,
Thank you very much for your sharing!
We do have monthly displays but we don’t have a regular plan for the student art for now. Hence, we starting a regular plan in the Student Center, and there is a call for student art (I will attach it at the end).
we have three places to display including 3 large cases (alarmed) and 2 square cases (unalarmed but locked). For me, I think we are free to display the object in these cases in the short term. And there were some photos showing that we had some open exhibitions before in the student center, like some installations, a few years ago (a collaboration with another organization). But if there is a long-term display plan, we still would like to offer a certain display case to display.

So at App State we have a gallery and a collection that is throughout our entire building. The gallery rotates each month and typically features student work (but sometimes Faculty/Staff/Alumni). The collection was started back in 1987and is mostly made up of student's art that was purchased at a student expo that is put on by the Art department each year. The advantage is that once purchased, we have ownership of the piece (we have transfer of ownership form they fill out) and thus don't have to worry about damage to "loaned" pieces. We also maintain a data base on all our art and have a loan program that other departments can borrow pieces for their office. Here is our website which should give you some more details but I am happy to chat more if you had questions.

Hello!?
At UC San Diego, we put out a call for art based on a theme and then create a group show. The art is displayed at the student union Starbucks. We even host an “opening reception” where the student artists can meet each other and bring in friends and family to show off their work.?
Each quarter we host a new theme.? Past themes include:? Nature & Parks, Honoring BIPOC Community, Creative Self Portrait, Home, and upcoming is Folklore & Fairytales.? To participate in the show, students sign a loan agreement, acknowledging that the art is in a public space and participation is at their own risk.??
The other spaces we have for art are in meeting rooms. These spaces are locked when not in use, so it’s a little harder to have a reception. Also, the art is not monitored there–so for those spaces we display student photography– we ask for digital photos that we print and frame. That way it’s not an original piece that we have to worry about damage etc.?
I’m happy to share more, if you want to send me an email:? ?keneri@ucsd.edu?

Hi Kim, the Memorial Union has display cases, our Art Gallery, where display are changed out several time a year.? There are sliding glass doors that open when the exhibit is setup.? We have an annual student show during Spring Term.
Our Infomration Desk team will manage sales for art that is on sale.? We do not take a commission on these sales.? The understanding is that the purchaser can obtain the art when the exhibit comes down.
We’ve also hadded falt screens around the building for digital art.? It’s another aveneue we’re exploring as both individuals and art classes can reserve the digital screen.
Good luck, Deb
