Are you burned out? Mabe it’s time for a nap.
Hello everyone,
Not long ago, I was chatting with a friend about our elementary school experiences. She grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and I grew up in Portland, Oregon. Worlds apart but some things were oddly similar, like naps and recess.?
In my early school years, naps were a regular part of the day, along with lunch and recess. As a child, rest-play-lunch-learn were normalized. The combination kept me active, helped smooth out my adolescent mood, and stimulated blood flow so I could learn. Somewhere along the way rest and play were cast aside, making more room for learning (working) and lunch (sometimes).?
As adults, the topic of burnout is bandied about in the news, among LinkedIn circles, and on TikTok reels. Folks are TIRED. Burnout can lead to attrition, absenteeism, and lack of engagement. Thinking back to childhood, have we considered that maybe what we need is rest? Focused time to relax the mind and recharge??
Tricia Hersey, The Nap Bishop, has a radical approach to burnout, take a nap. Her new book, “Rest is Resistance” is a fresh take on why rest is a form of resistance, a social justice response, and a response to the innate drive to perform (at your own expense). A recent article in the New York Times unpacks this topic a bit more. Give it a read and share your thoughts.
Be well,
