Dr. Valerie Sheares Ashby: Extending Women’s History into April!
Hello everyone!
The March recognition of Women’s History Month has passed the torch to April. Dr. Valerie Sheares Ashby will begin her tenure as president of UMBC on August 1, 2022. Appointed by the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, Dr. Ashby has made history as the first Black woman to fill this esteemed position. She succeeds Freeman A Hrabowski III, who has held the post since 1993. Thirty years. We’ve come a mighty long way.?
As Dr. Ashby prepares to transition from Duke to UMBC, the path opens up for a new leader to carry the baton and run on, just as she will do as Dr. Hrabowski focuses on his next chapter.
I get joy when I think about these historic accomplishments and I hope you do as well.?
