Did you know…It’s Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hello everyone!
Today marks the start of Hispanic Heritage month! I love celebrating culture, community, and connections. I like to learn why and how these celebrations came to be and?try to fact check my findings against various sites and sources. If you are of Latin descent and have insight into Hispanic Heritage Month, share your knowledge and insight with the DEI Community.
Origin
In 1968, President Johnson recognized September 15 as Hispanic Heritage Week. Some 20 years later under President Reagan this recognition became knowns as Hispanic Heritage Month and extends from September 15 – October 15. What is significant about September 15?
Formerly known as the Central American Federation, on September 15, 1821 Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua declared independence from Spain. Of course, information did not travel at the speed of a blink as it does today. More than a month passed before Costa Ricans learned of their independence. ?How will you recognize Hispanic Heritage Month?
A few years ago a friend took me to the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas to see a play called Crystal City 1969. The play is based on a true story about Mexican-American students in south Texas who demanded civil rights through a walk-out. Talk about social justice and racial justice in action! I had never heard this story and the play launched fresh questions in my mind. I called friends and asked if they knew the story. One friend, a Latina, told me that she was not permitted to speak Spanish and as she neared 60 years of age, she still could not speak the language of forebears. She knew of the story in south Texas and shared her experience growing up in the Lone Star State.?This play is running this winter in Dallas from November – December. If you’re in the area, check it out, or find a historical, cultural, or cuisine related event in your area. And bring a friend!?
Be well,
