Why the Pride Flag has Black and Brown Stripes
When the Philly Pride Flag and the Progress Flag, two flags with black and brown stripes, first came to my attention during grad school I was confused… then I learned. Let’s go through some of our history together!
Many pre-colonized cultures had queer inclusive structures that threatened white power and control. This resulted in their cultures being stripped of their freedoms when white European settlers colonized native lands. It was assimilation into the binary method or death, and often death anyway. Freedom of gender fluidity and expression is not new or ground-breaking. It is innately historical and cultural. The rights we have to freely express ourselves now is first and foremost owed to the natives that white colonizers stifled unjustifiably.
We also did not get our right to marriage equality and marching in city streets during Pride Month because of the Supreme Court. We got it because of the black and brown trans women and femmes who threw bricks at cops during the Stonewall Riots.?
There’s also the AIDS epidemic that disproportionately affected BIPOC+ communities while the government turned a blind eye.
We simply cannot have pride without people like:
We CANNOT have Pride without BIPOC+ because Pride wouldn’t exist without BIPOC+.
So, this is why the Pride flag has black and brown stripes. We are uplifting and honoring those who came before us in our community.?
What other BIPOC queer and trans activists can you name? Share and educate us! They can be famous, someone in your community, you decide who you want to tell use about!
