Hi Everyone,
We’ve been using a point system for close to 15 years now. It was developed by, and at the request of, our Student Leads (managers) who were looking for a more consistent way to hold peers accountable.
I’ve linked the form that gets filled out below so you can see examples of our basic infractions. There’s also flexibility for situational points, and we use it for adjustments should a student successfully appeal points given. We also use this form for our CAPS Stars tracking, CAPS (Communication, Appearance, Problem Solving) is our customer service program. Students earning CAPS Stars after having received disciplinary points can have the points reduced.

We have point thresholds for check ins to make sure the employee is understanding of the policy or to see if maybe there’s a larger issue, for example if someone is chronically late maybe campus transportation schedules don’t line up with their assigned schedule. If necessary the meetings are used to development an improvement plan.
- -5 points: check in with Student Lead (usually their assigned mentor)
- -10 points: meeting with coordinator level prostaff (used to be GA but we’ve moved away from having GAs)
- -15 points: meeting with assistant director level prostaff
- -20 points: termination
It’s structured rigidly but we’re really flexible, understanding that this is supposed to be educational and for a lot of our staff this is their first job.
A little more background to help the form make sense, we have two major functional units: Operations (building managers, info desk attendant, and office suite assistants), and Event & Technical Services (AV, ushering, and changeover staff for our event spaces). Leads are our student managers for the respective areas but also work together for things like orientation, training, and recognition to help maintain some consistency between the two areas.
Happy to answer any questions!

Same here! We don’t currently use a point system, but it would make things much clearer for our students and supervisors if we did. We will be considering and developing this over the summer, so if you already have such a system in place, please share with me as well. Thank you!

Hi Chrissie!
I wish I could provide an idea, but I have similar issues with our staff. I have been exploring the idea of using a point system and was wondering if you could share the resources you have received previously from other colleagues.

Hi everyone! I wanted to reach out and ask how everyone handles smaller type infractions for your student employees. I know that some friends have shared point disciplinary systems with me in the past, but as an office of one, I haven’t figured out how to manage that just quite yet. I have some of my staff that are not having radios on them, or more often not clocking in or out. Other than these infractions, the staff are great employees! Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!
