Colleagues,
As part of the ACUI Annual Conference in Denver, we are planning several components to honor the culture and heritage of indigenous peoples not just in the Denver area but across the regions of our association. We hope to not only provide recognition but also educate those who would like to learn more and do more on their own campuses.
We are looking for examples on your campuses of dedicated physical or digital presence in student centers or other campus buildings to recognize indigenous communities. Examples could include a land acknowledgement display or installation or dedicated art gallery. Thank you!

Hi Katie!
At the University of New Hampshire, Durham campus, we have a flag display in the Memorial Union Building (our student union), along with the land/water/life acknowledgement and a flag of the indigenous peoples (they donated it to us) whose land we are on. I have attached pictures here for a visual! At The University of Southern Mississippi, we have a flag showcase in one of our Union building’s lobbies. This is the third year of the flag showcase. We also have a poster of the flags displayed below the showcase, a website referencing the flags displayed (https://www.usm.edu/union/flag-showcases.php), and a QR code that goes to a survey that we launched this spring semester about people’s interaction with the showcase as a form of passive programming. We currently have 8 tribal nations represented this academic year. This showcase is on the east side of the lobby with an international flag showcase on the west side of the lobby.

Hi Katie,
On our quad we have an art installation, as well as a pair of peace poles outside our chapel that include the Onondaga language. We’ve also just recently renovated the office housing our Native Student Program to include gathering space for students. We have a land acknowledgement read at all events, and anywhere the U.S. Flag is displayed the Iroquois Confederacy flag is displayed as well. Let me know if you have any questions!
