Hello Ricardo,
We use Rockbot here at the Florida Atlantic Student Union. Rockbot is a subscription music service that will let you create your own music channels for your venue. It is a cost effective solution that we have been very happy with!

We have ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC public performance licenses, so we can play music in any public forum on our campus. We have a departmental Karafun account, which has tracks we can use covered by these licenses: https://business.karafun.com/resources-start-karaoke-business/1201-licensing-101-safely-run-a-karaoke-business.html?

Hi Ricardo,
I used Pandora for Business at another institution. It was ok, in that we could choose genres and schedule playing time slots, but could not choose the specific songs we wanted to hear. For example, if the university had a performer coming to campus, we couldn’t set it to play that person’s/group’s songs/music. Also it had internet connectivity issues occasionally. Good Luck with your search.

Hi Ricardo! We are using the company Sound-Machine.com and really like them. It allows us to customize playlists for different areas. We can do this through a Spotify playlist link or through their system of picking percentages of music genres we want added to a playlist. It's worked out well for us and has also allowed us to have more customized playlists going for special events in closed and open spaces since the licensing is there. You will likely need to contract with a company for amp and software integration for your building.

Hi Ricardo,?
The Union at JMU currently uses SiriusXM for Business through Dynamic Media.? The service costs around $420 per year per player.? They also offer a messaging option that allows for any advertisements to be uploaded and played at set intervals for $144 per year.? This doesn’t include the cost of a player.
We use Karafun installed on a laptop for karaoke events.? We use the professional License that is $49 per month.

We currently have a Rockbot subscription with players installed in a few locations around campus. We have a player in our game room and there are also players in both dining halls on the same account. It may be worthwhile to go in on the investment with other campus departments that would want music in their spaces as you can set different permissions for who can control what parameters in each space, as well as have completely different preferences set up in each space.?
One aspect of Rockbot that I appreciate is that I don’t have to stay as on top of what’s current/what students will want to hear. The service itself updates playlists and typically has a set of themed playlists each month that you can add to the mix. Students can also request music (for a fee) similar to things you may have seen at bars and restaurants like TouchTunes etc. I have also been very pleased with Rockbot’s customer service, any time there has been an issue with the device they have been quick to help me through it or to send out the appropriate replacement part if needed.?

Hi Ricardo,
Here at DePaul in Chicago we also use the Rockbot service and pay for a subscription. It is pretty easy to use from a User-friendly perspective. You put together a mix of songs and the service will choose specific songs based on the genre you set up. One area we sometime need to mute or turn the sound down for an event. I can easily complete this remote on their website vs in person which is a major plus.?
Also, if there are any issues with the service, their customer service is top notch and respond fairly quickly.
Being a Catholic University, we play Holiday Music during the November and December months. To change a format briefly for just a time period is also easy to do. It will also revert back to the normal playlist when you set a date to change the format back.
The Students, Faculty, and Staff all generally like the service.

Hi Ricardo,
Like many here, we also use Rockbot. The playlist are nice and you can change how energetic you want the music at different intervals throughout the day. For example we have lower energy music in the morning like “Coffeehouse Jazz” but faster paced songs in the afternoons. There’s also an app that we have on our Building Manager phone – I think the app is more user intuitive than the desktop, especially for student employees. You can also pick the rating and the songs that are too explicit won’t play.
We do also have the touch tunes add-on that both students and staff really enjoy. Though I will say if you do this, I would highly suggest limiting it to specific playlists people can choose from rather than a free-for-all. Learned that one the hard way… some student picked what was considered to be a holy song that is only supposed to be played in mosques and then while I was figuring out options to resolve that issue some students also picked some really insensitive songs after a student passing. Not fun.
I also have one of the Building Managers have a Rockbot specialization so they keep an eye on the Rockbot Touch Tunes queue.
