Managing Digital Signage Queue

I am curious how other universities handle/manage the number of digital advertising slides that loop on your building monitors?
Currently, we do not have a limit on the number of unique slides that are in our queue that loop through the slide show.  Any registered student organization or University department can submit a slide to be shown on our building monitors.  Displays are limited to 3 weeks per semester, and can be consecutive. We allow any campus event to be advertised, and do not limit it to events that happen at the IMU (i.e. Athletics department submits individual slides for each baseball game, gymnastics meet, etc.).
We recently noticed that it takes SEVERAL minutes, at an average of 10 seconds/slide, for someone to see all the slides in the loop.  So if you catch a glimpse of something of interest, but missed an important piece of information, you will be standing there a while before the slide cycles through again.

If you have links to websites or policies you are willing to share, we would love to know how others manage the demand to use digital signage for advertising.

    Thank you!

At The Rayburn Student Center we limit all slides to 8 seconds a piece.  We try to maintain  30 slides.  That works out to 4 minutes till each slide loops again.  Anything more than 30 slides is just too long.

We try to limit videos to 10 seconds.

    Hopes that helps.

    Hi Kristi,
I’ve been tweaking our digital signage procedures throughout the semester to send updated information to my more regular submissions before the fall semester begins, but the highlights connecting most to your question are here:

    – 10 seconds per slide – The longest we got was 6.5 minutes around Homecoming?
    – Content priorities are based on 1) approved events taking place in the Union; 2) approved campus club/organization events and activities hosted by the club/organization; 3) campus department services/offerings.
    – Signage must appeal to a large percentage of students, faculty and/or staff to be displayed. Member only events are not permitted.
    – I have four playlists which helps me spread out signage throughout the building and my updated version states the signage may not go on every screen.
    – Signage can only be up for two weeks?
    – No department or organization may run more than three ads at any given time

I’ve been making university department services/offerings without expirations go up and down when I notice the loop is getting too long and it’s helped me keep it balanced.

    Hope this helps a little!

Having too many electric signs can be a problem. What I’ve noticed at our university is that there are certain signs that run in specific areas. So the general areas like Student Union and in the classroom buildings hallways, Resident Life, etc. Then each designated area can have their own signs. So for example in my office (Counseling) we only have our signs. Myself and our outreach coordinator handle those digital signs. Occasionally we will post a sign from another department or for the university, such as Stress Fest activities.
But right outside our office in the hallway, there is a sign that is not run by us. This sign includes everything from university job postings to advertisements for the university (track and field winners, scholarship awards, etc) to other campus events.? I don’t think there are sporting events unless its something big, like the Wisconsin Track and field tournament or something. My building is mostly academic with a few offices, so I believe that the other academic buildings are similar.? I’ve noticed in our Student Union that more of the student organizations and sporting events are listed.?

So the best option might be to divide up the signs depending on the areas and what students congregate where.
