Hi and good morning ACUI friends.
I am hoping to gather some info, primarily from urban institutions, but also in general, about multi-faith space used for prayer, reflection, and similar uses.

    Some background:
? ?We have Hillel and Newman Centers adjacent to campus.
? ?We don’t currently have the ability to build something new on campus and the timeline would be too long for a solution.
? ?One significant space need is for Muslim students daily prayer (up to 5 times a day on a seasonally adjusted schedule).
? ?We’d like to create a space that is welcoming, that may be used by anyone in the community, and that is flexible.
As most of you know, Temple is “space-challenged”, specifically in many Student Affairs areas, so we are working to be creative with existing spaces.
The creation of a “center” (or multiple centers) at this time isn’t an option.
We do have a very strong Diversity, Equity, and Advocacy team on campus, but their space is constrained as well.?

What I’d love to learn is:

    1. Do you have such a space on your campus?
    2. Your total enrollment.
    3. Space size
    4. Who manages/owns the space?
    5. Where is the space is located (in Student Union/Center, other Student Affairs facilities, etc.)?
    6. Any other details that may help us craft an exceptional space for our community

I made a google form that folks can fill out.? It can be found here: Interfaith/multi-use prayer/reflection spaces.
If you’d like to reply within this thread, that will certainly work too – any info shared is great and useful!

Thanks for the help and expertise :)?
    Jason

Hey Jason!? Hope you had a great weekend.? We do have an Interfaith Room in our Campus Center and have had it since I’ve been here…so for the past 6-7 years.? It is open to everyone on campus, including faculty and staff and is available during regular operating hours.? We have a total enrollment (depending on year) of 5,500-6,500 students.? The room is about 8′ x 25′ and the Campus Center owns and manages the space in conjunction with our Diversity and Inclusion Office.? The space is card swipe access, so we can pull data to see how many people are using it.? We do allow small groups to ‘book’ it for bible studies, though many do not use it that way.? We had the room painted with calming colors, have a partition in the middle of the room, and have a cubby stand in the room that offers different resources, prayer mats, and paper towels.? We also made sure to add a dimmer to the space so that users can adjust the lighting.? The only wishlist that I have for the space would have a wash sink outside of the room to accommodate all of the users.? ? Let me know if you have any other questions and if you want to pop over one day to check out the space!!

    Hi there!

Here at California State University, Long Beach, our University Student Union (USU) has a “Reflection Room”.

The reflection room is meant to cater to students who are looking for a quiet, safe place to meditate, pray, relax or simply reflect.

The room is beneficial to various religious affiliations, but it is also a great resource for reflection and relaxation activities such as yoga. There are no tables or chairs to discourage students from using it as a group study lounge or meeting room. The environment is welcoming to all sorts of quiet reflection.

The reflection room is open during USU operating hours. Students are prohibited from playing music, using computers and holding group study sessions or meetings. Those who violate the rules are asked to leave the room.

Let me know if you would like more information.
