    Hi all!

We are getting more requests to livestream performances (bands, singers, etc.) and we are struggling with Zoom due to their background noise suppression settings. We have been unsuccessful in getting anything to come through well, despite making many adjustments on the settings. As a result, we are looking into options for an alternative platform that is better equipped for performance settings with room mics and a few individual/section mics. I know that some suppression is going to happen to account room noise, but I have to imagine there’s a middle ground somewhere. Anyone had a good platform that they’ve used for performances in large spaces? Thank you!!

    Hey Cortney,

There are a couple of things worth checking to make sure you’re getting a good audio signal through Zoom. First of all, are you using an audio interface to get your microphone signal into the computer? Or are you using a USB mic to try this? Some USB mics may also have noise suppression built-in that you would have to adjust through the device properties. Depending on the type, it may also be designed to pick up more room noise than dedicated mics.

On Zoom itself, under “Audio Settings”, there should be an option for “Original sound for musicians” (if you don’t see it within the meeting itself, you may have to log on to your account through a browser to enable the option before starting the meeting). Under that, there should also be options for “High-fidelity music mode”, “Echo Cancellation”, and “Stereo Audio” – assuming you have a good connection and aren’t worried about feedback, I would enable “High-fidelity music mode” and “Stereo Audio”, and turn off “Echo Cancellation”. Echo Cancellation is really only needed if you’re playing back the Zoom audio in the room itself. I’ve done a number of performances on Zoom using this – happy to hop on a call and troubleshoot at some point if needed!
