Facility Break/Holiday Hours
Posted by Stephen McCay on March 10, 2023 at 10:52 amWanting to see what other student unions/centers do for break/holiday hours throughout the year. By breaks and holidays we are thinking about times like spring break, fall break, winter break, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc. Do you adjust hours at various breaks/holidays and if so, what determines those new hours (dining, retail, etc. that may still be operating in the facility)? Is there a difference in what the adjusted hours are if the institution is closed or not during a break/holiday? And what is the reason for the adjusted hours (operational efficiency, lack of staffing, few/no students on campus, etc.)? Any insight anyone has would be appreciated.

We go to reduced hours based on dining options. We close 1 hour after food services shutter for breaks. Then we go to a 8am-5pm model. Next week we are open 8am-5pm M-th closed Friday and Saturday.

Hi Stephen-
We shift our closing time up three hours (from 11pm to 8pm) during break periods. The reasons you included (operational efficiency, lack of staffing, few/no students on campus, etc) are all part of the equation!
All break hours start the “eve” of the holiday – so for example, spring break is next week for us, so we start closing at 8pm tonight (Friday). We resume regular hours the Sunday before the start of the academic schedule coming out of spring/summer/fall/winter breaks.
For one-day federal holidays outside of the academic term (Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day), we are closed. For one-day federal holidays during the academic terms (MLK Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day), we operate on our break schedule.
Campus dining operates all of our dining locations, so they run their hours in compliance with our schedule.

Hi Stephen – we are 6:30AM-8PM M-F on my Health Sciences Campus and only close for Memorial/Independence/Labor Days/Thanksgiving. Other closures are University related, namely the week between Christmas and New Years. We have adjusted closing time the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve in the past.

In the Atwood Memorial Center at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, we reduce hours around breaks, typically to office hours 8am-4:30pm. We will reopen the day before classes start to normal hours (i.e. the final Sunday of spring break when classes resume Monday). We do this for staffing, dining hours, and operational needs. We allow internal or external clients to book space when we are closed, but there is an additional fee for outside of normal operating hours and it is contingent on staffing availability. We post our hours on the website for the whole year, then create signs for the doors and email/social media with hours around breaks and the hours each service in the building will have. https://www.stcloudstate.edu/atwood/hours.aspx

Hi there,?
Like many others have shared, here at Rutgers University-Camden, we reduce hours for breaks, based on dining hours of operations.? For spring break this week, we are open 7 am to 7 pm, which is shortened from 11 pm.? We close on the weekends since dining is closed, and we work with facilities to use time to get our carpets cleaned as well.? For one-day holidays, it depends on the holiday.? We base it off of the university calendar, so if the University is closed (Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Thanksgiving and day after, and the week between Christmas and New Years), then we are also closed.? If it’s a holiday that there are just no classes (MLK Day, Easter), then we are open the same hours that dining is open since they are in our building.? For winter and summertime, we go to an 8:30am to 5pm schedule.? If we are open, then internal and external groups can reserve space anytime.? If it’s a day that we would typically be closed, ie a summer weekend, then the group will need to pay for my student employee staffing to have us open up.? Hope this helps!
