Commuter Lounge

    Hi everyone!?

At Temple University we have a lounge that was originally designed to serve our commuter population. The space is outside of our Student Center building and close to one of our popular commuter train stations. The original goal was for it to be available after “typical” hours for any students who may be waiting for trains at odd hours. We have lockers and a small kitchenette in there as well.?Because of the location, we do not have our student staff manage it the same way we do the Student Center, yet somehow it has magically kept care of itself! We recently pulled numbers of how many students/staff were tapping into the space (you can only access it with a valid school ID) and were truly shocked with how often the space was being used. With this in mind, we’ve realized it has a lot of untapped potential!?

Does anyone have similar spaces like this at their schools focused on commuters? Are there any particular items you brought into the space to better serve that population? How have you managed the space? Any knowledge or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!?

    Hi Sarah,

We are in the process of opening a commuter lounge (opening day is actually next Wednesday!) with our Student Government being the primary driver behind the project; I am interested in seeing what others have seen work well also! Ours will have a microwave, study pods, some high top tables, and a round table for people to use for collaborative projects, along with a printer. We also have lockers that we bought years ago for commuters to use while on campus (keys are returned at the end of each semester) and we relocated them into this space. I honestly have no idea what to expect from this space and we do want to see it be successful so I would love to hear what others are doing as well!
