Hi Michael,
The art gallery here at the University of North Texas Union is pretty competitive in terms of students wanting to showcase. Here is a link to our website which has a lot of information on it: https://studentaffairs.unt.edu/university-union/things-to-do/union-gallery/index.html
We utilize a software called Slideroom to accept submissions. You can easily build out your application, have the artist upload images, and have judges review the submissions seamlessly. We have a staff member that oversees the Art Gallery (and has other art-related responsibilities as well). We also have two student staff members that also assist with the gallery.
Our art gallery is in an open space so does not have to be staffed during business hours. Our staff assists more with gallery flips, curating group shows, hosting receptions, and handling the application process.
Happy to chat more!

Hi Michael,?
Perspective Gallery at the Virginia Tech Squires Student Center is run by 2 professional staff members and 13 student staff.? The professional staff, one of which I am, oversees the administrative and programming operations of the gallery.? I curate, design installations, and then with my staff, install the work.? We used to sell art, but don’t anymore.? We do connect patrons who are interested in purchasing art to the artists so they can make their own sales.? I design our exhibition schedule on a two year basis and work with academic partners, cultural and community centers, and the greater community at large to build our exhibitions.? Gallery exhibitions are bolstered by successful adjacent and parallel art programming made available to students throughout the week and year. ?? Here is the link to the gallery website.? I too am happy to chat with you anytime.?
Sincerely,
Robin?

Michael,
Here at Milwaukee, we recently completed a renovation which including relocating our Art Gallery (website is out of date, but new site is in development). Our gallery has a history dating back to the early 1970s, and a collection with pieces dating back to the early 1960s. The space is programmed with shows feature work from student artists as well as artists that we contract with for shows. Most years we do seven shows of varying lengths of time.?
For the upcoming 2024-25 academic year, we will have 3 shows for the fall term and 4 for the spring term. We will kick off the semester with two contracted artists, with the second lining up with Latinx Heritage Month (this provides opportunity for numerous campus partnerships), and will wrap with a show called Crossing Over, which is a scholarship showcase for student artists and a strong partnership between the Union and our school of the arts.?
For the spring term, we are tentatively scheduled for 4 shows, the first a contracted show with a local artist, then two shows for student work (one a Juried Exhibition, and one featuring first year art students), both again are partnerships with our school of the arts. We currently are exploring ideas for our last show of the year, with an interest to present something in conjunction with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.?
We staff the gallery with students, with the Lead position usually falling to a graduate student in the school of the arts. This is viewed as a high level student job as it provides real world work in gallery management.?
For our student shows, the artists have the option to sell their pieces. Some shows have commission, and for most I often work with a committee to purchase pieces for the Union’s collection.?
We operate the gallery M-F while shows are open, and at times extend hours for artist talks or partner with our Craft Centre to have the artist work with students in a hands on environment.?

Hi Michael,
The Nicole Stott Art Gallery at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach has a committee of staff members who share in the management of the gallery. We meet periodically throughout the year to review requests for shows in the gallery. After five years of work, we have a routine schedule for gallery shows. In the fall we put out a call for art from the campus community, usually centered around a theme. During the winter and summer breaks we feature a local artist or group. The spring semester has been designated for the Embry-Riddle Art Club show. Besides the club show, the gallery committee accepts submissions to its email. This year we squeezed in a few smaller shows at the request of alumni and campus partners. The installation of a gallery hanging system has increased the efficiency of installing artwork (AS Hanging Display Systems) for committee members and for the artists. I highly recommend installing a hanging system. I oversee Student Assistants who are tasked with the daily opening and closing of the gallery as part of the opening/closing procedures for the Union Office. It is advertised as Monday-Friday 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM. We give ourselves a 30 minute window to ensure the gallery is open by 8:30 AM when our office opens at 8 AM (same for closing the gallery at 5:30 and the office closing at 6 PM). Our office Student Assistants also conduct a mid-day check on the gallery. The gallery is located within our Starbucks footprint. It’s in a prime location for visitors, but we we have found that propping the door open invites more people into the gallery. We have a guestbook inside the gallery to collect visitor counts. We have purchased one piece of art from a student for the Student Union but do not participate in any sales that may result from the shows. Please reach out with any questions.

Hi Michael,
We have an Art Gallery at our Student Union at UNC Charlotte. It is led by a student lead and a team of student employees. They are supported by our GA (and one of our ADs when the GA is unavailable).?
We do accept submissions on our website, we host monthly receptions with the artists, and our team is responsible for the install/deinstall of all of the artwork. We have 3-4 standing exhibits in partnership with academic departments and otherwise our calendar is open to student, faculty, staff and community exhibits. Our exhibits rotate monthly, with about 3 weeks for the exhibit and a week in between for install/deinstall/clean up. Last month our exhibit featured an artist from South Africa and this month is an exhibit on sustainable art. Our website also has information on our permanent art collection, in which art purchases go through our advisory board.?
Our website is here: https://studentunion.charlotte.edu/gallery

In a similar boat, at Appstate we maintain both a collection of art we have purchased over the years (mainly from students/alumni) as well as a Gallery. This is done with a team of 3 student employees who meet with me bi-weekly for some minor guidance (they are pretty self-sufficient, but many of these hires hope to eventually become curators so they know the work better than I do).
With the Gallery, we do have a significant partnership with the Art Department for shows. The fine arts program's graduation requirement is to host their own show, so we are able to take part in that since there are only a few on campus locations that students can do that. When we are building out our schedule, we have a committee with members of the Art Department on it, Students, and staff members that either have interest or their role is rooted in the arts. I will say our gallery does tend to expand across multiple mediums, most recently hosting a gallery linking 19th century British poetry to art pieces as part of several graduate student research.
Overall, we try to be relatively diverse in our selections to keep the space fresh and interesting showcasing multiple mediums, but can be limited to what proposals are submitted. We do utilize our committee to help get the word out for our deadlines which is helpful to have both students and professors advocate/advertise for this.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions/want to chat a bit about this.

Hi Michael!
The art program at Oregon State’s Memorial Union comprises an art gallery and a permanent collection. Its operations are currently in a transitional/building process to place more of the curatorial planning and decision-making with students, with me functioning as the mentor/advisor. My position is currently half-time. The website is also in a state of flux, but it does line out some of what we are doing: https://mu.oregonstate.edu/gallery
We are creating a committee of interested Memorial Union student employees to curate shows, learning how to come up with ideas then reach out to artists via calls for entry, show requests, and research on our end, go through the process of choosing work, and the actual hanging. Over the past 10 years or so, the position has been a small percentage of two separate positions, so the number of shows had whittled down to 4 a year, changing over during breaks between terms. The gallery is right in middle of the MU Concourse, so while that makes it very visible, changing shows over in that space has to be timed in a way that minimizes disruption (we are definitely kind of loud, lol!).?
Some shows have work that is for sale, some don’t. It’s up to the artist. All sales transactions are handled by the MU Help Desk staff, and we take it from there to get the artist paid. Our commission is very low – 20%. But, as we don’t have dedicated staff there to talk up visitors in order to sell work, it’s fair IMO. We have had receptions in the past, but those aren’t always well attended, the gallery space is so central that it gets high traffic on a daily basis rather than at a single event, like a reception.?
