Hi Laura,Thanks for bringing up this subject. We are about to open our new student center which will include art gallery space (new venture for us), so I would also be very interested in feedback about management, selection process, security, student involvement/ownership, partnerships with art department, etc.Best,Paul

Hi Laura,
At UMass Lowell, we don’t have a “standard” dedicated space as an art gallery, rather we engage approx. 240 linear feet of open wall space and a few select floor locations throughout the building for circulating exhibits that people apply for. We space reservable in our event scheduling software 25Live and require exhibitors do the following before any exhibit is confirmed: review our procedures and guidelines, complete an application for space and sign a liability waiver form. In terms of management, I receive all applications and review them with our pro staff team in our student center, University Crossing.
The space utilizes a wall hanging system by Systematicart, that our Art Department collaborated with our facilities team to pick out. There is a dedicated student art gallery with a dedicated TV that is changed each year with senior projects from students across campus that is actually mounted on the wall and does not utilize the hanging system. This is a collaboration, between our art department, facilities, and our operations team since it involves: technology, wall repair/ modifications, and student art. This is the only space that I do not approve since it stays up for a whole year.
In terms of management of the actual exhibits beyond the Student Art Gallery, we do not have a part in hanging or displaying any art. We verify that exhibit sponsors have someone install the exhibit to our specifications in the guidelines to remove any liability, and schedule them in increments of 6-12 weeks max. If you have any questions, I am happy to chat my email is adam_dunbar@uml.edu. Its not a ton of space, but it really helps to highlight the beauty of our building.
Best,
Adam

Laura –
We have several display cases (Centercase for Art) in our building. It is for student artwork. I will try to attach the pd for the student staff person who organizes this programming space (otherwise, please email me and I’ll send it to you). One of the “challenges” we encounter is that we do not censor the material that goes up AND we host public events in the building for all ages and viewpoints. So on occasion we will have nudes or other “graphic” pieces in the space that is not always appreciated by all guests. We find it to be a great learning opportunity for all of our guests about what a University is all about.

Hi Laura,
We have a dedicated art gallery space here at the Reitz Union. It also serves as the pre-function space to our auditorium/theatre. Our Arts & Crafts Center Manager, Jill Keezer, oversees the gallery space and should be able to provide more information regarding the management, student involvement, and scheduling of exhibits. She can be reached at gilliank@ufl.edu.
Best,
Tara

We have such a space! The current gallery space is 3,200 square feet (unsure if that includes the storage room) and opened in 1972 with collection pieces pre-dating that. We’re actually in early stages of a renovation which will include moving/upgrading the gallery space and the finished space will be about 2,200 square feet (does not include storage room), but with the moveable walls, the usable footage is hard to determine at this time.
Linda Corbin-Pardee oversees all of the arts programming areas in the Student Union – art gallery, cinema, studio arts and crafts – and will be able to discuss management, student involvement, exhibit scheduling, academic partnerships, etc.

Minnesota State University, Mankato has an art gallery in the Centennial Student Union. It is managed in collaboration with our art department on the academic side of the house. They select the shows that are in the space, and in partnership with our Operations team, we open/close and maintain the space. James Ball, Assistant Director for Operations, can provide you more information if needed — james.ball@mnsu.edu

Hi Laura!
We have a dedicated Art Gallery in our building (approx. 874 square feet) with rotating monthly exhibits, artist receptions and programs that are all coordinated by our Art Gallery Student Leader and team. It is adjacent to our piano lounge which serves as a reception area for Art Gallery events as well. Feel free to connect with our Operations Coordinator, Paul Burger pburger1@uncc.edu, who helps manage that space with the student lead for more information. I’m happy to chat further as well.?https://studentunion.charlotte.edu/gallery
Hope this helps.

Hi Laura,
We have a dedicated art gallery here at the University of North Texas University Union. Here is our website that outlines our submission process (plus other info about the gallery) https://studentaffairs.unt.edu/university-union/things-to-do/union-gallery/exhibit-your-work.?
We plan a semester in an advance with exhibitions rotating every two weeks. (In summer/winter, the exhibitions stay up a bit longer). Our Union Arts coordinator, Mike Fleming, would be a great resource (Mike.Fleming@unt.edu) or I am happy to chat more too! We have found the art gallery to be a really great learning experience for our student exhibitors as they are able to learn the nuances of exhibiting their work (hanging artwork, deciding layout, etc) plus we have some of the best shows!

Thank you for all of the great responses about art galleries.? After connecting with a few others in Chicago at the conference, there was some energy around finding a time to gather those who have gallery space for some sharing and learning from each other.? I am willing to host a zoom session in early May to help facilitate.? If you or someone from your team is interested in participating, please complete the whentomeet.? When we have a time that will work for many (I know finding a time that will work for all won’t be possible), I will post the date, time, and zoom link back in the forum.
