Summer Planning!
Now that it’s summer and you’re enjoying all that downtime (just kidding!), I thought I’d share some areas you can start thinking about to strengthen your emergency management plans for your Student Center.
These buildings are central hubs of student life, and our readiness can make a critical difference in how well we respond to unexpected situations. Whether you’re updating policies, training staff, or preparing for high-traffic events in the fall, here are some key areas to consider:
Preparedness & Planning
- How often is your Emergency Action Plan updated?
- Do you have continuity plans in place for major incidents (e.g., power loss, weather events)?
Staff Training & Response
- Are student employees trained in CPR, AED, evacuation protocols, and mental health response?
- Have you conducted any active threat or severe weather drills recently?
Facilities & Infrastructure
- Are your evacuation routes accessible and clearly marked?
- Do your event spaces allow for safe evacuation during crowded programs?
Event & Crowd Management
- How do you plan for large or high-risk events (e.g., concerts, protests, late-night programs)?
- What role does your team play in coordinating with campus police or EMS?
Communication & Coordination
- How are emergency alerts communicated inside your building?
- What role do front desk staff or student leaders play in crisis response?
Recovery & Improvement
- After a major incident, what debrief process do you follow?
- How do you incorporate student or staff feedback into future planning?
Let’s use this space to share what’s working, what challenges you’re facing, and what ideas you’re exploring. Feel free to post examples, questions, or resources. Looking forward to learning from your experiences!
