Hello everyone!
I’ve read that the college union is the living room of the campus. That idea evokes images of comfort, ease, relaxation, and engaging conversation.? However, ongoing legislation in key states suggests that the type of conversation permitted in the living room is changing, rapidly. Florida, Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma and other states have current or pending legislation that will materially affect what can and cannot be presented to students.
A recent article from Inside Higher Ed, “An Affront to Open Discourse” presents a perspective on legislative changes that sparked a panel discussion organized by PEN America and the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU). The two entities issued a joint statement that says (in part), “These legislative restrictions infringe upon freedom of speech and academic freedom, constraining vital societal discourse on pressing questions relating to American history, society and culture.”?
That is a mouthful. The article raised this question in my mind, How can you facilitate conversation with students about social justice, racial equity, diversity and inclusion, while complying with legislative changes and expectations set forth by the institution?
This is not easy to answer but it’s worth discussing.?
